How does the iDisk actually work and what does it do?

I've ticked the box to sync my iDisk and I have a new strangely pink icon on the desktop but what does it actually do and how does it do it? What do I get access to and where and why would I want to?

It's the storage drive on the .Mac / MobileMe subscription.

I assume when you sync, it sends your information to that drive in the sky, from the folders/files you have updated/changed and specified to be included.

Yeh iv been uploading all morning. But up to 20GB > 2GB, and i like the whole new mobile me web UI. a lot nicer on the eyes than Gmail imo. Shame about the name though. But i got first pick on my address so im not too bothered, and the rest of the service is good.

corrected ;)

In thing Apple may have missed is people pointing Time Machine for a remote system backup.. that would be good money well spent for companies and individuals.
Especially if iDisc had a corporate version.

If you have sync on then you are looking at your local copy and it syncs changes to and from the server. When it syncs depends on your settings. If you have sync off you are looking at the server copy.

i got a quick question regarding the idisk, is it possible to chagne the name? would really prefer it to be called iDisk on my desktop...

(and as a side question, i signed up and put my username as lowercase but would really have liked it capitalised but wasn't really thinking... anything i can do about this?)

Nope and nope, unfortunately.

I was reading on the mobileme help section, and what you can do if you're still within the trial is cancel the account from account settings (on the web interface) and then open a new account with a different name and the first one will be fully deleted...

this is actually not the case, i tried to delete the account, which is said went through fine, then when i tried to open a new one with the capitals where i want (SooTyLaD instead of sootylad) it said the account name was taken...

so long story short, i assumed it wasn't possible and went in and reactivated the original account (which proved that it wasn't fully deleted in the first place) but the downside of all the messing around was my trial was lost and it charged my card straight away and now my status in system prefs is not 58 days trial left or whatever its 365 days till renewal :(

bugger, all i wanted to do was change some capitals...

It should work without changing your account

since its spelt the same... and email address dont use capitals..although if you capitaise things usually they will work
