How does the thread rating system work?

How many votes before a rating is registered in the rating column? Does it take account of people voting everything one star or five stars? Does it take more votes to reach five stars than it does to reach four? Once enough votes are registered, is it just an average of all the votes?

I was wondering this because we have a hell of a lot of highly rates threads:

IMO a four / five start thread should be harder to attain. But the main purpose of the thread isn't to bitch about five star threads but to understand how the thread ratings work on this forum.

And yes I know this thread will probably achieve one star faster than you can say Jack Robinson, such is the price of knowledge.

I never really pay attention to it, and certainly don't read threads due to the rating. I know that's not what you're asking though, just thought I'd share

never even realised I could rate, thought it was just based on amount of posts etc etc etc. Learn something everyday.

It averages votes from users. People don't tend to give stars to average or poor threads, hence the distribution.

I never really rate threads unless I see a 5 star thread and think it's crap, then I give it 1 star.

Although I don't think 1 star should be for a terrible thread, I think even 1 star is a good thing, at school if you were given a gold star you wouldn't expect it to be because you did terrible work :eek:

Maybe they should add two vote areas one for stars showing just how good the thread is or also you can give 1-5 pancakes if it isn't so great?

People don't bother voting unless they think it's worth 4-5 stars.

I think it takes about 5 or 10 people to rate the thread before the stars appear. The ratings on the forum listing are then an average of all the ratings for that thread. AFAIK it works the same for 1* threads and 5* threads.

Also, most threads with stars tend to be highly rated, as people CBA to vote crap threads. Except this one, obviously

If you hover over the stars it gives you a score average. A few more 1 stars and the average will be downgraded from 2 stars to 1.
