How durable is the aluminium Apple Watch?

Ouch that’s a stinger. I’ve had my s3 since day one and i wear it all the time. It held up great but I was moving garden furniture and managed to rub it against a brick wall. Face has several scratches on it but you can’t see them when the screen is lit. Body is perfect though.

I don’t like cases either tbh I’ll probably upgrade next gen (or later) as this one is still working great

Yeah, I'm very disappointed in that, especially as I really have no idea how it happened. If I knew, I'd say.

Genuinely tempted to sell it and buy the SS version instead.

I'm very aware of my ability to ruin nice things, so I didn't even risk wearing my apple watch before I put some sort of protection on it. I got a surround by Ringke which is pretty minimal and actually decorates the watch, and some screen protectors which are the type you wet the screen and then squeegee them on. Which were a pain to fit to be honest, but the end result was pretty good.
I've had the watch for 4 months now and if I look closely I can see evidence of the protector having taken some scratches which might have damaged the screen otherwise. Same with the case.

I was browsing the online store earlier and noticed that a shop that's less than two hours away had the graphite SS version in stock.

Yeah, I drove there. What can I say? I'm shallow and didn't want a scratched watch. In my defence, the SS version is very pretty.

Now I need to decide what to do with the scratched one. The picture makes it look worse than it is, when the screen is on, it's not too visible.

Three days.

Three sodding days.

Worst of all, I have no idea how it happened. I'm not aware of knocking it, I'm not aware of scraping it against anything. I put it on charge, took it off charge half an hour later and noticed the scratch straight away. It's not even a small mark, it's deep and I can really feel it with my fingernail.

Three days :(
This is why I've always gone for the SS version, yes it's a lot more money, but I only upgrade my watch every 2 years and the screen on my S2, S4 and now S6 have remained flawless.

I still think it's unusual. I've had 2 x First Gen, a Second Gen (S2), 2 x Third Gen (S3) and a Fifth Gen (S5) and this is the first time I've had any mark whatsoever on the screen.

My Alu S4 44mm has a few little marks on both the screen and the body but nothing drastic, especially considering I wear it daily.

My wife's Alu S4 40mm has a massive crack in the screen — god knows how she managed that. After she did it, I put one of those thin plastic protectors on it but it started peeling along the edges and eventually came off.

I'm going to try a Ringke protector that @bazzabear suggested and if it's any good on the wife's watch, I might get one for my own.

For a piece of tech with a relatively short life-cycle, I'm not sure I could warrant the additional cost of an SS watch.

Thanks, @bazzabear.

Got the matt silver one for the wife. For some reason, I was expecting it to have a screen cover/protector and not just a raised bevel that sits over the screen. Obviously didn't read the description properly. Decided to give it a go anyway as I assume the raised edge provides some protection unless you hit the screen head-on. However, despite following the fitting instructions to the letter, it fell off after one day, so it's going back.
