Have no clue of how to do anything like this.

Basically - I want to temporarily have a website that is just a forum, until I make/get someone to make me a website.

If I got some web hosting (any ideas on who is best by the way?) how would I go about putting a forum on it?

(Plus, is something like this forum free or do you have to pay for it?)

Any help would be appreciated :)

This forum, Vb is not free.

PhpBB is free and can be installed on any webhosting that has php and mysql.

What would be the 'theme' of the forum?

For example ocuk is a shop, because of that the forum is about hardware/software/computer stuff

A forum like will have server costs, not that much and VB licence which is around £300 I think.

This forum pays for itself.

Register1

A lot of hosting packages have 1 click install of forum software but it is not always the latest version. I use http://register1.net/ for hosting. They have a 1 click install of phpbb2 or you can upload phpbb3, or any other forum software, yourself and they will help you with the installation.

I use http://eastpeak.co.uk/ for both my sites
and if i do get into bother they always have a speedy and efficient service
last time i check they also had 1 click install for phpbb 2 and 3 and Joomla,Mambo and Drupal CMS's
Its not free but at 1.99 a month you cant go wrong really ;)

They look like a Heart Internet reseller, i.e. unlimited accounts with unlimited diskspace and data transfer for £30 a month. Not really recommended.

Dont know how you get to £30 a month m8 , i only pay £3.50 a month for 2 accounts and have never had better service in the last 8 years of running sites

Heart Internet are a big hosting company. They offer reseller accounts for £30 a month which give people unlimited websites with unlimited data transfer and unlimited disk space. Your hosting "company" has one of these resellers accounts.

Your hosting "company" has also opted out of the Nominet WHOIS database, which is against the rules for businesses. Not exactly confidence inspiring.

Not slagging them off, but it's worthwhile doing some digging behind any company you choose to use.

Mmm well i dont really see thats a problem, its upto them where they get there servers from i guess !
I can only speak from personal experience with them and as i said so far thats been first class ;)

Just saying be careful - they don't have any contact information on their website (no address or phone number!), the WHOIS information is protected...

Can I ask how you heard about them?
