how far back have you traced your family?

I've personally traced it back to a guy who sailed on the HMS Victory but my grand parents can trace it back even futher.

My only living grandma is an orphan and knows nothing of her real parents.

My only living grandad (other side) left my mums mum when she was pregnant with my mum and so don't know where he is.

So that kinda limits me to my nan on my dad's side.

My mum is really into genealogy so has traced our family quite far back. She has only been able to go back a few generations on her dads side because all the records she needs were destroyed in a fire a long time ago.

My boyfriends family is ridiculously easy to trace because they were farmers and stayed in the same area for generations. There's actually a family graveyard on the land of one of the farms they owned so it's possible to go back 100 or so years just visiting it!

We've got back to the 15th century I think, having an uncommon name helps. Beyond that there are a few breaks, so it's not possible to piece it together completely. A few notable people on the family tree!

This thread had made me start looking into my family tree. What sites are people using? Have a free trial on Ancestry at the moment.

no ones really been able to go much further back than the 1500's then? wow i find that quite dissapointing, not in a lack of effort for people who have tried kind of way but in a way that maybe there should be some sort of public archive that could help with this. i personally think it would be very interesting for a lot of people and quite important in helping family values.
