How far would you commute

Quite - assuming we count travel time as 'work time' you pull your average earnings down to about 13 quid an hour if you do that.

Greeeeeeeeeeeat.

High expectations eh :-) I'm on a lowly £8/hour. The £40k thing, I simply based on a mate who earns that and commutes 3 hour round trip.

Mine is a 30 mile round trip which doesn't sound like a lot, but I have to drive through the middle of Bristol (avoiding that would add another 10 miles on) so it can be anything from 30 mins each way on a good day, to 45 mins most days, and can be up to an hour each way depending on traffic.

It's more than enough for me, and is probably my limit, not to mention £40 - £45 a week in petrol.

Current commute is a 15 minute drive each way. Longest commute I've had has been 40 minutes each way. Ideally that would be the limit for my commute.

Who knows what the future holds though.

I did a commute temporarily which was about 1.5 hours, maybe 2, mostly on the M25 every day.

I wouldn't even have considered it for a permanent thing. It was worth it on a temporary basis to get me where I am now, but if that hadn't been a dead cert I wouldn't have bothered, it stunk.

I do about half an hour each way now, that's fine.

I like the idea of a short commute here and there :P. I have a 4-5 minute walk downhill to work, but would love to have a 5-10 mile cycle to wake me up. I need to find a job where I either work from home, or commute when I feel like it... And I also get paid in gold.

It would also be a good excuse for me to buy a new bike. XC commute would be great!

About 90 minutes tops personally, I enjoy the drive if there are no jams, I sit in a comfy (heated) seat in a climate controlled room with a great sound system, but I want to be able to drive normally/quickish, I get highly annoyed in jams, too much stress.
Trains are fine too for up to 90 minutes, though not all, just the ones with wifi and when I have a place to sit.

I wouldn't do it if it involved sitting in a subway train for longer than 45 minutes, or in a bus.

So 90 mins tops train, car (outside rush hours).
45 minutes tops bus/subway/trams.
30 mins tops by moped or cyling.
20 mins tops walking.

But no longer than 90 mins total, preferably all in the car.

Also depends on the pay of course, if travel costs more than an alternative job close by, then obviously no...
Why so long in cars/trains ? I enjoy travel by both of them, in the train it's comfy and wifi means just browse the net unlimited or watch something online. Car travel is always enjoyable, wakes me up and makes me feel good, provided I can keep moving. Once I get in a jam I start getting highly annoyed and driving gets tiring and annoying ( especially because I try to get out of it asap, look for alternative routes, switching lanes all the time to the one that is moving, etc.).

I live 50km from work... it was taking me about 1.45 to get to work. That was really getting a bit much. Now on the bike it takes 45 mins each way which is both much better and highly enjoyable.

Depends on the job, salary, and mode of travel.

My previous commute was 25 minutes, which was not the end of the world. I'd commute further for an awesomer job. Currently I drive up the road about 10 minutes which is a dream.

My friend commutes to Paris each day. Can't say i'd be too chuffed with that, but i suppose by train it's not like it's hard work. He gets through a lot of books.

Depends on the type of transport and if you can use the time for anything else.

I certainly wouldn't drive for 1.5 hours, as all I can do is listen to music/podcasts.

Tube means I can spend the time doing some stuff that I would also do at home, so I don't feel the time is technically wasted.

I'd probably tolerate ~30 mins, but I only live a 4 minute cycle away from my current job. I'd need fair recompense if I decided to get a job with a longer commute.

I did 1 and a half hours each way for 3 years and have recently cut it down to about 55 minutes on a good day. It's so nice having the extra time each day, I'm able to get in to work even earlier and be more flexible when I need to be.

Travelling can be such a burden, you can't be at all flexible and you can easily miss out on things.

Any commute time is unpaid overtime to me so Less than 15 minutes or get the **** out. :p

I live in central London and it takes me 40 mins door to door. Thats a 20 minute walk and 20 min tube journey with 1 change. Used to bother me at first, but now I dont even think about it.

My maximum commute time was around one hour (tube/walk) each way. That was fine as it was mostly reading time. I would draw the line at three hours per day.

1.5 hours each way!! Not sure I could personally do this but it's getting more common as people move further out of London seeking cheaper housing. I know a few people who commute from Ipswich and beyond to the City every day. Not only would that do my head in from boredom, but the costs must be excessive.

My commute to the City is easy.. 20 min bike ride to Chelmsford station, train 35 minutes to Liverpool St, office is next door. There's no way I would tube anywhere as part of a commute.. Not now..
