Looking to get a newer car in the next month-6 weeks, a Focus ST3 but it would appear that all the reasonably priced ones are in excess of 150+ miles away from me.

How far would you travel to get a car, and how would you go about closing the deal ?
 
Tough one, guess it depends on how rare the car is- and/or how much of a good example the particular model is.

If it ticks all the right boxes I'd have no trouble traveling 200-300 miles.

I wouldn't make the buyer aware that i'd traveled that distance though, they'll be a lot less likely to lower the price knowing you've driven all that way.
 
I live just outside Cambridge.
The Octy vRS I purchased last year was from Lincoln - around 98 miles away.

Before making the purchase I went to see a few vRS's.
I think the furthest I travelled (and didn't purchase) was to Hull - around 140 miles away.

To get the right deal on the vRS I was more or less prepared to travel anywhere.
The only tempting one I didn't go to see was in Glasgow - at 350 miles I felt that was possibly a little far.
 
I bought my DC5 from Glasgow.. a huge 800 mile round trip :) The journey home was like a mini adventure! Certainly the best way to get used to the car is to drive it for 6 hours immediately after buying it :p
 
As far as needs be. I mean come on - what's a bit of a drive worth against getting the exact car that you're 100% happy with?

Don't bottleneck yourself to only a certain range unless there's an abundance of choice.

Regarding not making the seller aware of the distance you're travelling, I'd disagree. I've made it clear in the discussions I've had with the seller that I'd appreciate him being honest and upfront about anything that's wrong with the car BECAUSE I'm travelling so far. He's sent me tons of photos and loads of descriptive emails over the last week. (No txt spk or chv languidge in da emailz iva). The car sounds genuine, so fingers crossed, I know exactly what to expect when I turn up. If the car was 5 mins down the road, I'd merely be dis-chuffed if I arrived and it was a heap.

This, drove an Impreza back from Dover to Cambridge but it was worth it which I think kinda answers your question, if it is worth it for the right one then I wouldn't be too fussed how far it was :cool:
 
even if youre travelling miles, be prepared for sellers who will lie through their teeth even when they know youre travelling the length of the country
 
I've gone 600 miles just to pick up cars I've never seen before, so for something I was really interested in I'd have no hesitation to say, fly to Berlin or something.....

So yea :p - a long way :D
 
Depends on how rare the car is and how much I want it.

I was looking at going up to 100 miles for my Alfa, the 145 is the common one, but I lucked out and found a good one 10 miles from home.
 
Went to Bristol once to view a car, didn't take it in the end as the SH was a bit leary. I live in Edmonton so about 130 miles each way.
 
As far as it needs be without having to cross water really.

My current car was a 600 mile round trip including 2 trains and the London underground.
 
i went to germany. albeit just over the border and i live in belgium.

but i wanted the car before i even saw it, so that was a bit silly really. i do think that if you travel very far to look at a car, you'll probably buy it unless it's a proper dog.
 
From Preston I have bought my cars from (in order)

Manchester, Portsmouth, Oxford, Barrow In Furness, Carnforth, Kent, Bodmin (Cornwall).

Not cared about distance, condition and price is everything.
