How fast can you reliably go for £5000?

Define fast. Straight line only is boring after a while, round corners is important. Id be thinking a mx5 turbo could be in a good state if you find the right base car ....200 bhp in something that handles and is light isn't going to bore....

What about mk2 Mr2 turbo ?

They are the engine of choice mainly because they came as standard

. But luckily they are awesomely tunable and lightweight too. 400bhp+ is getting toward the higher end of what is possible and reliable (at least at 'reasonable' cost) but ~360bhp is pretty easily attainable and still reliable

I'm not even convinced it'd lose a CTR on a 1/4 run, never mind a decent road.

A quick google suggests 1/4 for the Soarer is 14 seconds, which is about a second faster than a CTR.

I would think it would struggle to 'lose' a CTR on a straight road as well.. perhaps pull away slightly but leaving for dead??

To be fair, I had similar views about CTRs vs my 200 until I came up against one on my private airfield (he was trespassing, ****). Yes I made ground on him but he was a lot quicker than I anticipated.

BPU'd 1JZ Soarer so realistically anything from 300bhp to about 320bhp. Not had it on a dyno so wouldn't want to give a precise figure (I do occasionally hit fuel cut so I'm running quite high boost, as such I'd like to think I'm closer to the higher figure than the low one).

It was close at low (read 'legal') speeds but much above that it was a bit of a different story.

To truly leave another car for dead these days isn't easy! The whole "wouldn't see which way it went" is crap too.

£5k I would try and find something Jap, turbo, and modified. But consider the running costs of such machines before you buy. Not expensive, but definitely not cheap.

Absolutely this. I think people really underestimate just how much of a power advantage is required to 'leave something for dead' or be so quick that you 'didnt see which way I went'.

Put a decent driver in both cars and I doubt a 343bhp M3 would leave, say, an Integra Type R 'for dead', either. It would be quicker, it would pull away and it's obviously a faster car but you need massive amounts more performance to simply vanish like the other car is going backwards.

FWIW I didn't think Joshy meant you wouldn't actually see which way it went. It's just a saying. Why take it so literally? He just meant it was faster. Cars that 'pull like a train' don't have 6 carriages behind them either.

Perhaps a bit of an exaggeration* on my part, but
A) I was very noticeably quicker (I thought I'd reiterate that I stand by that point in case someone tries to accuse me of 'back tracking')
B) The point still stands. A CTR is slow in the context of the cars that £5,000 could potentially see you in.

*As tim says, it is a figure of speech.

It's a saying when describing the difference between a 1.0 Yaris and an M3
