How fast can you reliably go for £5000?

Cars that 'pull like a train' don't have 6 carriages behind them either.

And neither do they pull like a train, given a train slowly but surely gets up to a top speed of about 100mph whilst towing hundreds of tonnes.

It's good to highlight how stupid some sayings are ;)

Yep, that's not one I like btw, it was the first one that sprung to mind:p

In context a 5k Impreza is unreliable to the CTR you could get

Are Imprezas unreliable? What usually breaks first?

Pulls like a train.

Suppose this thread could be an excuse for me to post this. I know it's £8000 and it has a red lip but apart from that I think it looks awesome!

A problem with buying modified cars is, do you trust the previous owner?
Nice car, good find :). I would trust the previous owner if he had been a member of an owners club for a while, and had owned the car more than 5 minutes. You can find out the history of a modified car far more easily by reading past threads on owners club than you can by reading dealer service history! Modifications don't bother me as long as they are done properly.

I hate that saying ;)

How can you say a CTR is slow compared to a Soarer?

Slower but not slow :p

The context of this thread is cheap, moderately modified cars. Given the sort of speed and power you can extract from Soarers, GTS-T skylines, MR2 Turbos, Pulsars, 200sxs,etc for the sort of budget being talked about I think it is fair to say a CTR would look slow in comparison...

For an 'all round' fast car i think you'd be hard pressed to do better than somthing like this surely?

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2305043.htm

Sounds like its been done to a high standard, and its not been tuned to daft levels of BHP so its useless for anything other than a drag strip. plus is essentially the same engine still being used in impreza's today so lots of cheap parts readily available. Could handle a track day, hoon around a B road or a bit of light forestry fire road drifting!

I totally agree with fox about the power advantage point, i was shocked how little there was in it between my gti6 and a focus st (mk2) the other day, certainly wouldnt have thought it was what a 60hp advantage looked like. I expected to be left but I was with him for a long while

New to this forum but i would say DC2 Integra Type R :)

My younger brother had one, i used to pinch it often, and i loved it despite having a BPU Mk4 Supra running around 380-400 BHP :)

The thing i found with the DC2 is that Once your up at 100MPH or So it just seems to crawl along.

0-100 in Vtec is good fun though.

who drives along at 100+ these days though...

whats important is whether you smile on your way up to there :)

i wouldnt class skylines, supras, evos or imprezas as reliable either. for that money id want N/A and as new as poss. CTR hard to beat in the reliability stakes.

To truly leave another car for dead these days isn't easy! The whole "wouldn't see which way it went" is crap too.

£5k I would try and find something Jap, turbo, and modified. But consider the running costs of such machines before you buy. Not expensive, but definitely not cheap. :)

Quite

The E92 M3 V8 didnt see which way this BMW M5 V10 engined E30 M3 went

That's leaving "somebody for dead" After 45 seconds the E30 is just a spec in the distance :p

I would say rx7, but reliable it would not be.

Good for silly speeds mind, just watch the rotor tips.

lol, surely there are none of these left now?

Dont see what it offers that a 400bhp Jap thing doesnt.

the question was how fast can you go for £5k and i don't know jap cars besides drifters(and these are usually insane tuning prices lol)? ;)

i'm taking that literally lol as £5k in bike terms would be 190mph+(early busa and turbo it.... easy 200... ;)) but in car terms it'd be a modded car and cossie motors are the strongest and most tuneable engines of the last 30 years (in my eyes at least....) :)
