How fast can you reliably go for £5000?

In which case you have answered your own question :p

Despite all of the 'hype' I've got my doubts that one is going to give much more of a sense of speed and excitement than a stripped 205 gti with a 16v lump ;)

Still, I wouldn't describe a DC2 as slow at all :)

Neither would I. Until it was lined up to some of the metal that £5k could buy you if all out speed was your priority :)

Fair enough. Describing it as slower would make me happier though :D.

The OP did mention reliability as well by the way, not just speed ;)

Toyota Aristo, Supra engined Lexus GS basically. Over 300 bhp standard, very easy to get them to over 400 bhp, just change the exhaust.

The exhaust systems are incredibility restrictive to keep boost down, in fact it's necessary to restrict the replacement exhaust or else the turbos would boost past destructive levels. You'd need a fuel cut defender to make the ECU happy to boost above 1 bar and in reality you would probably want to do a few supporting mods, but essentially yes . Turns an unassuming 4 door saloon into something that'll crack 180MPH on a long enough road. Pretty reliable too :).

If you don't mind an auto this would be my choice:

Can't say that I have, but for what it's worth I owned a moderately powerful, N/A FWD car with a close ratio box and actually considerbly more power to weight than a DC2 (from the figures I'm looking at), so I assume the driving experiences are broadly the same - Epic amount of fun on B Roads and seemingly manic acceleration up until legal(ish) speeds, but this does not stop the fact that a 'proper' fast car (which this budget will more or less buy) will blow one out of the water.

What was it?

I don't think 280ps quite equates to over 300bhp.

The one he linked is the 1997-2000 model which is 300bhp, the 1991-1996 model was rated at 280 PS however 'rated' is a relative term as most ~300bhp JDM cars of the early 90's had misquoted power figures as the JAMA 280PS limit was still in force.

Didnt we already cover this earlier?

He's right dude, £5k will buy a car that can quite literally blow a DC2 out of the water, I used to own a Prelude BB4 which in a straight line is virtually even with a DC2 ITR and on slip-roads I was left for dead by my friends 450bhp 300ZX.

Yeah it's kinda a myth that the UK version has a lot more power.

Last time I checked the UK version could run on 95 RON whereas it was a no no for JDM versions.

Maybe they aren't specifically mapped for 95 RON, more like "more tolerable" to 95 RON than the JDM version.

There is a power gap, but as you say, not as huge as is suggested on paper. In the real world, the UK runs about 320-330bhp, the JSpec around 300-310 iirc.

Regardless of the power gap, there is hardly a massive difference in stock performance largely due to the UK specs being quite heavy in comparison due to all the added options. Other performance characteristics of stock cars include the ceramic JSpec turbos being quicker spooling than the steel UK ones giving boost a bit earlier, cam profile differences, blah blah.

In tuning is where you'd see a massive difference. The UK's being higher spec will reliably reach 400-420bhp on stock internals with just the addition of an exhaust, decat, fuel cut defender and boost controller @ 1.2-1.3bar (though I'd be looking to add an FMIC to that).

The same mods on a JSpec will not allow safe running @ 1.2bar or above for very long and most owners will keep a maximum of 1.1bar on stock turbos for safety. This nets around 380ish bhp.

I think these have already been answered but I'll reply anyway.

The UK Supra is 330 bhp anyway, the JDM ones that have been imported are usually measured about the same. Just because they had the 280 limit in Japan doesn't mean they stuck to it, the NSX-R is also said to be around the 320-330 mark despite Honda saying it is 280.

My Brother has a Supra which was running 450 bhp with just an exhaust, as mentioned above he had to fit a restictor in the exhaust to limit the power to just over 400 bhp to keep the turbos in a safe limit. All he needs to do is spend a few £k on a single turbo conversion and he would be over 600 bhp, no internal engine work required.
