from pressing the power button, it takes my 3 year old pc 1 minute 20 something seconds to open firefox  then i changed the boot order to boot from hdd first and now its 38 seconds :D it was trying to boot from a network, the dvd drives and the floppy drives  im never buying a pre-built computer again!

About 46 seconds from power on to fully-functional desktop, excluding time taken for user input during login.

- AMD Duron 900Mhz, 256MB RAM, 30GB IDE HDD
- Linux Kernel 2.6.15, GRUB 0.97, KDE 3.5.2

is that your main rig?

Not my main rig (that has better hardware, runs Windows XP and takes an age to boot up!) but the way things are going I may well shift over to linux as a primary operating system :)

was gonna say those specs looked low to be your main rig, linux or not!

well that was an estimate with me counting, i did an actual timed run and it took 24 seconds, maybe i was a bit too hasty ;) although its not a bad speed for my spec...

athlon 3800+ skt am2 single core
1gb value drr2 5400 ram
160gb sata 2 western digital hard drive

Why the hell are people getting over 1min boot times? :/

Sort your pc's out! :P
There are people booting on here before my monitor even switches on let alone detects my raid partition. Not sure whats up with that?

I'd love to give an accurate time but my desktop is in bits atm. At least a minute and a half. Opty 175 @ 2.5, 74gb raptor with nothing but the os on it. I'll time it properly when its built again.

It was an awful lot quicker with a fresh windows install on it, but i'm a power user so its packed with an entire monitor full of desktop icons and a start menu that spans most of the screen.
Imo there is little relationship between performance and boot time, sadly.
I can bring any machine to its knees. ;)

I'll time my laptop now, but as its not my main machine its fairly clean and not a victim of my messy computing habbits.

Edit: My laptop takes 1 minute 8 seconds. Pm 1.7, slow harddisk. Boots a lot faster than my opty.

How do you get below a minute without removing stuff you need? You must have completely bare pcs with nothing on them. I can't get a working machine like mine packed with stuff below a minute.

Just done mine again with a split timer

10s post complete

18s ACPI Update complete

26s Sata Raid Detected

45s windows loing promt

47s at the desktop

I fail to see how someone earleir with the dfi ultra d sli is getting in in 17s when I've got same board minus sli and it hasn't even got to booting xp by that point.

I think some of these times are refering to opening a laptop lid or resuming from standby which is not quite the same thing.

I seem to remember WinMe being the fastest to load and that was about 30s for me, 6 years ago.

This machine Iam on is junk, it's boot drive is appauling for no apparent reason.
slowbootdriveqe8.jpg

I think some have broadband connections faster then this drive is at times.

This machine is offically slow, anyone worse then this should hang their heads in shame.
1:25 to the user logon screen and 1:53 till I entered a profile and loaded up calculator.

This is the one speedtest they dont but should do in those conroe tests :o
