How fast is the internet on your work computer?

terrible but we use internet phones so to ensure they stay live all the computers share a portion of the bandwidth it's enough to do my job on :)

Our office is only a 100mb link as that is only or web browsing and work stuff.

However as one of the UKs leading Hosting/Cloud/Colo/Network providers we have some big big pipes, and we operate on our own dark fibre network in around our london based DC's, and some big pipes on our Welsh DC's, and some decent carrier providers

16 up 7 down but we are in a shared office so sometimes can drop rapidly in mornings when everyone turns up and syncs their drop boxes/Google drives ;)

I work from home.

200/200

Prior to that it was 20Gbps synchronous but obviously I never saw that delivered to an individual desktop.

They're also highly, and I mean highly, monitored. If you were to download an ep of Game of Thrones on it, the ISP would be contacting your IT dept almost immediately. We've had a few...instances like that.

Can't say I've ever experienced that. Most leased line providers don't care what you use them for.

Why aren't the government linking their own buildings up around the country on their own version of JANET and then selling capacity to community broadband proj...I'm being too sensible again.

That isn't true. They'll get infringement notifications which they'll forward on, usually because people are stupid enough to use public trackers and their details are obtained that way. ISPs will only look at the type of application, rather than what's inside the packet.

Slow but mainly because they have so many stupid layers of software in place to protect from infection. Plus I believe all our traffic is routed through the US which drags it down further.

Terrible. 10Mb down and 1Mb up for 38 people. We're an IT company who doesn't believe in good IT.

25/25 fiber to the premises is over priced even in london. I was speaking to a dutch guy on reddit on /r/technology and he could not believe that it costs £500 per month for a 100/100 and that it had only recently came down. He had 1 gigbit in his house for 80 euro. It does seem like it should be a lot cheaper by now, especially in cities.

This same guy also pointed out that the fiber that I have is not fiber, it is vdsl, fiber to the cabinet is not fiber, it is actually vdsl. Calling it fiber is just marketing.

I get 200kbps downloads, up from 100kbps last year. If I have to download anything over 50mb in size my major organs literally climb out my body in protest.

Edit- on a paradoxically 'alright' i3 haswell PC.

20/20 Virginmedia Leased Line.
Does the job most of the time but we have been looking at 100/100

On a side note, what are the best HOME options for upload speeds?

Likely hundreds of gigabits up and down. When I did a speed test, I got 980 mbit down and 890 mbit up, which was likely my Mac gigabit port capping out.
