How fast was I going? Possible Speeding Ticket

Monday 4th July I was driving home from work while I may have been caught by a police man holding a speed camera device. The dual carriageway I was on is usually NSL but this section had a temporary speed limit that goes from NSL to 50 then to 40 before going back up to NSL. At the time I did not notice the police man on the bridge, I only found out when some work colleagues mentioned it the next day at work as they saw him and they are positive they were caught speeding. Anyhow I've had no NIP in the post yet.

Is there a way to work out my speed from the coordinates on my dash cam? I've no idea how to work it out.

Not tried it but you can enter coordinates into google maps for a location, might be able to do it with directions to get a distance?

Or if it happened on the 4th July just wait till the post on Monday, that's the 2 week mark for a NIP...

From a quick estimate using whole second time stamps between 54.625-60.375MPH average between the junction exit and the bridge. (This could be refined using the GPS coordinates, etc.)

Watching the video in slow-mo, though it is hard to be sure, it doesn't look like they were monitoring speed at that time. EDIT: I take that back from some frames it looks like he does have a camera or similar up.

The car in front of you was going at the same speed anyway so chances are if it was a speed camera they were monitoring them.

I’ve had a situation on the A3 where I was probably going a bit too fast with another car in front of me and there was a camera van under a bridge where it dips down. I never heard anything but I reckon the car in front would have done.

Also you should know how fast you’re going.

I think I was doing over 40 but under 70. I was slowing down but still keeping up with traffic. It's not easy when you've been doing 70 and suddenly faced with a sign saying 50 and 10 seconds later another sign saying 40 especially when it's the first time you've driven down there since they appeared. :o

15 years of driving and I've never had a speeding ticket or any kind of driving offence.

The letter can take a good while, i was caught because i drove into a village and the sign said 40 but there was another sign half way through the village that said 30. I was later told it was a "buffer zone" and i did not see the 2nd sign, it was probably a tiny sign half hidden in some hedge.

Anyway the letter took a long time, i thought i had got away with it but no they took their time sending it and the course the group had to do cost us about £800 between us all, only for one woman to talk to us over webcam for like 2 hours.

Dunno how they operate generally but around me when they have a policeman with a speed gun they usually have a couple of police vehicles stopped in a lay-by further down and will wave you to come in rather than send a letter later and usually prioritise those who are going distinctly faster than the traffic flow. But I wouldn't bet on that.

There wasn't any other police around plus this is the only time I've seen him there on the bridge. I've made sure I've been at 40 every day since.

14 days on Monday but I hear even if it takes longer for the NIP to arrive there is still no get out as they say it's deemed served as long as they have it in the post before the 14 days. Although it's no such thing if its the other way round and we have to post something by a certain time.

You passed three 40mph signs in the video so it shouldn't be a surprise that the speed limit is 40. You are just keeping with the flow of the traffic in the right hand lane rather going faster than it. If everyone was going around the same speed then you might be OK even if everyone is a little above the limit, unless the cameraman was having a bad day and wanted everyone.

Also your number plate is visible in the recording so you might want to take the video down at some point.

You couldn't have been enough over 40 to get a ticket. I would guess the cars in front of you slowed to 40 and you were hardly above them.

What I'd be more worried about is how quickly you closed in on the car in front. If they had to brake for some reason, straight into the back unless you have super reflexes.

I appreciate 'it's the law' and all that. But using a mobile gun there is a bit of a **** move isn't it?
Well they are *****, that's what they do!

I've had 3 speeding tickets.

One was sat on a blind corner just after the road transitioned 60 to 30, got me doing 34!

Another was in his black cop uniform, at the bottom of a steep hill, hiding behind a bush! (visible deterrent ) 35 in a 30.

[ In the interests of safety tesla/others could provide a useful software upgrade to recognise emergency vehicles so you can respond accordingly ]

It's the speed you were doing about 16 seconds into that video as that is where they will have clocked you.

The car in front pulls up a few seconds later, reckon as others have said you might have got out of that one, wouldn't be so confident about the one in front though.

Also given how the car in front clearly clocked the camera and slowed down leads me to believe you were both over the limit.
