How fast was I going? Possible Speeding Ticket

I'm sure the ticket has to come by 14 days as its to prove who was driving.

If they pull you over and get your details there and then, the ticket/points is allowed to take however long to process and get to you (upto many months etc)

if the road is straightish find the big circle distance as the crow flies between two co-ordinates and divide by time
http://edwilliams.org/gccalc.htm suggests 53mph between co-ordinates times 38.12->38.35
so that's the max avg speed.

so .... what Rroff said

Almost certainly over 40 and going to come down to the wire, the calibration of the device and at what point(s) they sampled the speed which speeding band it would be in. EDIT: Having a guess at the stretch where the speed was most likely to be sampled, using the GPS coordinates and per frame time stamps gives 57.4767MPH.

Unfortunately the video isn't clear enough to see what kind of device (the older ones only measure speed and don't capture registration/photo) and for definite if they were using a speed gun.

Well they are *****, that's what they do!

I've had 3 speeding tickets.

One was sat on a blind corner just after the road transitioned 60 to 30, got me doing 34!

Another was in his black cop uniform, at the bottom of a steep hill, hiding behind a bush! (visible deterrent ) 35 in a 30.
So you were 100% at fault then, not the police.

I think I was doing over 40 but under 70. I was slowing down but still keeping up with traffic.
I got something through the post a couple of days ago. On the M25 it dropped to a 50, I had cruise control on and when I saw this speed change coming, I knocked it down to 50... the car gradually started slowing but I passed under the sign and got snapped doing 64. I didn't get the initial letter, but a couple of days ago got the 'you've not replied to us, this is your last chance' letter. It's annoying as it was 10pm, the few cars around were going the same sort of speed (someone behind me got snapped too) and I was trying to obey the law, just didn't slam my foot on the breaks to get down to 50. :(

If you do get a letter and you're lucky enough to get the offer of a course, they're actually really informative.

Certainly, even at 46, I picked up a couple of things I didnt know/had forgotten about when it comes to road markings and 'furniture' and speed limits.

My Mrs has been driving for 25 years and has never had a speeding ticket, which never ceases to amaze me when she drives us somewhere.

In the city she regularly cruises at 40mph. Bristol has 20mph zones popping up everywhere and she drives straight through them at 40mph!

Still no NIP in the post and it was 2 weeks ago today.

If I do get a ticket and I'm offered an awareness course I'll definitely be taking them up on it as keeping a clean licence is more important in my head. They can have the money I'm not bothered about that.

If it is just a moral dilemma for you then I'm happy to come around if you lube up

I haven't said the police were wrong, simply that their choice of locations is often dicky. I haven't denied I was at fault, infact I clearly stated the extent to which I was.

20+ years of driving, I don't view it as a significant problem. :p

This is the problem, you never see a cop holding a speed camera in a permanent 20 zone because most folk know it's a 20 zone. It certainly is a dicky move to put a temp 40 limit on a 70 limit road then try and catch everyone out.

They only put the limit on that road at that junction because of an increase in traffic due to road works on another route in that town when it appears to be flowing OK to me.

i never did receive anything through the post, until almost a month later, when something came through about my last chance something something. I sent that back on the 11th and still haven't heard anything. They either have issues or they really are just very slow.

Did you ever check the speed in the nextbase software?

Tried to but the software does nothing when I add the video to it.

EDIT: Got it working, says I was doing 58kmh before I reached the bridge with the copper on so about 36-37mph. :)

To be honest I don't think the Nextbase Player is accurate as later on down the road it's still saying I'm only doing 50mph when I would have been doing 70mph by then. Hmm...

EDIT: Actually I think it is right as I went past one of those LED speed display signs in my down and the speed on the display matches the Nextbase speed so overall looks like I'm safe. :)

I think the software has the units messed up - unless the video speed is messed up 58MPH is much more likely than 58KM/H.

Is the car leased? Do you own the car? Is your name on the logbook?
