I tried to get the cartridge out but can't:

That round curved part surrounding the cartridge... it won't come off without breaking it.

Not even sure if it's made to come off? Anyone got ideas?

That curved part should definitely undo. It's probably scaled up and will probably be tricky to remove without marking the chrome finish.

How old is the tap? I'd be tempted to just replace it unless I knew I could definitely get the correct cartridge

Looks like there is a little allen-key nut in the centre of the valve? Try unscrewing that and removing the cartridge (with water off / tap isolated).

Edit: is this an allen nut?

you have had a plumbers wrench on the head - I usually put a piece of leather between that and chromed surfaces, to not mar it too much

Thats good of Screwfix - all you need to do now is undo the pipes underneath and big ring nut holding it on to sink - your worst nightmare isn't over yet.
I would be tempted to put a bit of heat on that ring and see if it comes off -if so just use bit's from new one.:)

I installed the original so should be fine. I could try remove it, funnily enough Screwfix want the old tap back but just said drop it off anytime.

Old git response incoming:

Why do they design these so that you need a replacement cartridge and often have to change the whole thing?

Back in the day a pack of assorted tap washers would repair any dripping tap in minutes.

When I get our bathroom done I'm going to insist on traditional taps.

Don't know if I'll be able to get this agreed for the kitchen refit though.

I'll probably buy a spare cartridge in advance and pop some silicon grease on the threads of the housing and the grub screws.
