How good are these "powerline" adapters?

Just for balance - I bought some powerline 85MB ones so I could get rid of my wireless. Have to say they were really poor - although the status showed 83MB constantly the conection kept dropping out and I'm sure the actual bandwidth was in fact far lower. I've gone back to wireless as its pretty reliable.

I had connected directly to wall sockets too. I have a feeling its due to the fact that the wiring is very old. Never mind - it was worth a try.
 
installed a pair for XE104 yesterday

one in wall socket and the other in a Belkin Surge 8 way unit (no other choice!)

one xe104 connects to a HTPC and the other to my router

can stream videos fine, can also stream HD files (albeit with a little stutter for a few seconds, but ones it buffers its smooth as!)

very impressed with these, just plugged in and played

the util doesn't detect the units though, probably cos im using the surge protector, but no biggy as it does what i need it to do.
