How good / bad are Carrera bikes?

I'm looking to retire my mountain bike of over ten years as its got a bit rickety and well past its best. Budget is around £300 and looking at Halfords it looks like that pretty much leaves you with a Carrera. Does anyone have any experience of how good / bad they are? I could up my budget if I thought it was worth it. I don't do anything too taxing, mainly countryside tracks, bashing through the woods etc. But would prefer it to last a while.

They're alright. £300 can just about get you something decent elsewhere though, especially during end of season. If you only do light trails you might be better suited by a road bike.

Had a Carrera MTB from almost 10 years ago, still going relatively strong. Good spec, not sure what they're like at the moment though, but they always seem to come well rated in the £500 market for MTB, don't think the Road Bikes are anywhere near as good.

There are a bunch of bike shops in Leeds. Evans or EBC would probably be a good place to start, but you'd have to wait for one of the MTB guys to show up to get bike recommendations.

For ~£300 at Halfords, with no magic sales on, I'd take the Voodoo Marasa over any Carrera I know of (or anything else sold there around that price).
