How good is V-power vs other fuels, really?

Honda recommends 95 RON for my car. That'll do me. I do tend to fill up at Shell, Esso or BP though rather than the supermarkets. Price is barely any different.

I have seen some people claiming higher mpgs with super stuff but it's nothing that a change in wind direction or temperature couldn't account for.

Its the "if it's designed for super then you'll get a little more power/mpg" - but I've not seen many decent test that shows this. If the effect is substantial you'd think the fuel companies would want to prove it, if it's minimal then you'd have thought a decent independent test would put it to bed once and for all.

Understandably it varies from car to car, which is probably the main difficulty.
Well, I'm sure if you stick a knock sensor on my car and run 95RON followed by 98RON you will see a difference straight away!

I don't really get the debate over whether to run 95/98/5% ethanol or whatever. That can all be worked out with science and maths. Fuel additives however seem to be shrouded in a cloak of secrecy as to what they do. Is there *any* non-anecdotal evidence floating around regarding the effects of the various compositions used by the main suppliers in the UK?

Additives keep the engine clean. The more the better. Dispersants, detergents and friction modifiers are typical additives

Well I put whatever is cheap or nearby in the Civic, don't bother with V-power, don't think it likely to make any difference, never have done with any of the non performance cars.

However the 350z is run exclusively on 99RON fuel and our nearest Tesco petrol station is very far out of the way and shell isn't so it gets V-Power, if Tesco was nearer it would get that, don't bother with BP as they seem to be more expensive.

Hawker

Besides that AFAIK in Japan they got 100 RON fuel

So me and Muffin` putz vpowerzz in and we got standard hp out of our imports :D

The 330Ci says I can run 98ron, have run Tesco 99 a few times but feel bad spending money on it, I don't notice any real difference at all, engine is smooth anyway, power is the same, mpg doesn't seem to move much

My butt dyno cant tell the difference on my import GTO, or my Golf TDi. Noise/performance/MPG zero difference.
I'm really surprised anyone would really notice the 5% bhp (at most!) difference a fuel would make.

However the GTO really did not agree with Nitro+ when Shell changed over, got a mild misfire that's now gone is running Tesco's 99. Probably just coincidence but i'm in no rush to go back to shell.

Ford state an increase of up to 5% on the ST when using SUL, an equivalent of 12BHP. I use SUL purely because it's mapped and the tuner recommends it. I solely use V-Power only because it's on my way to work. I'd use Tesco if it was a bit closer, at the minute it's far enough away to wipe out any savings I'd make.

Only the poor buy 95 ;) (t'is sarcasm btw)

Can't be seen to be poor on OcUK ya know...

Been running 95 in the Mx5 since i got it, also tried 3 tanks of 99 in a row and didn't notice a difference. My 182 has been mapped specifically for 99 ron however and the difference between even 97 and 99 is very noticeable. Not so much in power (questionable if any) but in smoothness and delivery.

Noticed a diference on the piggyback ecu I had on the mx5 before, havent tried normal unleaded on the standalone yet, doubt i will.

Can't say regarding the derv end of the spectrum but V-Power is night and day better for turbocharged petrol cars, time and time again, a car won't produce the power.. Oh look it's been filled up with some crap from an Indians forecourt

Very noticeable difference when running my st205 on 95 vs vpower, especially since I put the blitz ecu in, I don't put 95 in through choice just on the odd occasion when I have no choice and only just enough to get me by gets put in, it's got a knock sensor though.

If I had a diesel I'd give the equivalent a go for sure just to see if it made a difference, not a lot to lose really.
