Do not buy a cheap psu. It's the wrong place to save money as it is the single most important component in a pc. Cheap psu's are built down to a price and use cheap components, have weak unstable rails and will never deliver their claimed output.

The Coolermaster psu that comes with the case is not very good either and quite a few have been dead on arrival. Your prospective build, if overclocked and with a 5850, will pull around 275-300w as a max from the wall. This is a very good psu and is more than enough for your rig.

PSUs are confusing.

You need to look at the 12V power, which is what supplies power to the CPU and GPU.

A lot of cheap PSUs have rubbish power on the 12V rail, and loads of useless power on the 5V rail, and their power ratings are 'tweaked', aka not accurate or reliable by a long shot.

Unfortunately, there is no standard regarding the advertised power and the actual reliable delivery (kinda like laptop battery life, which are notoriously inflated). So you just need to look a bit more into it than any other components as a cheap PSU are a disaster waiting to happen.

In short, don't buy a rubbish PSU, even if advertised at 750W as they are most likely lying. Get a SLI certified PSU, with power to spare on the 12V.

options are OCZ StealthXStream II 600W, Be Quiet Pure L7 530W, XFX Core 550W, Corsair GS600, Corsair TX650. So around £60 mark.

I have reservations about the Elite Power 500W, can't find the Amp ratings on the 12V, not even on the manufacturer site, and it's efficiency is pretty low so not a good sign. CoolerMaster has a checkered history with power supplies. They top range are good, but their bottom range suck balls. However it should cope with a 5830. For anything higher, I would get a better PSU.

hmm interesting stuff, well if it can handle it then i guess i'll go for the BeQuiet Pure Power L7 530W as thats not to much more, i'll still get the same case though.

If its just for gaming you really only need 4gb ;)

i'll take your word for it but my one other query is that is the motherboard below

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-150-MS

compatible with the below ram as the motherboard in the specs doesn't state anything about 1600 mhz, it says it supports - 2x DIMMS Supports Dual Channel DDR3 800/1066/1333 8GB Max

Corsair XMS3 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit

or am i getting this all wrong
