How great is the Audi A3?

I had a S3 as a company car for just over 3 years.

Best all-round car I've had.

Only problem was a broken rear wishbone - a design fault which has now been fixed, AFAIK.

BMW and Mercedes don't platform share outside their brand.

Not sure about BMW but didn't Mercedes share platforms with Chrysler

And really VAG is a group that owns multiple brands, Neither BMW nor Mercedes are formed that way so its a moot point.

Also dont BMW shares engines with "non" BMW branded products?

Only once they have finished with them - 300C is based on 96-02 E Class, the Crossfire the 98-04 SLK, etc.

Yes - among others, 2.5TDS in early Omegas, 2.0d M47 in Rover 75/MG ZR.

I'm a big fan of the current A3 and will probably get one as my next car, although it would have to be the Sportback version for me, rather than the 3 door.

Extra doors + extra rear legroom = win.

I was tempted but had a sit in one and found the seats where to small for me, the missus also said I never looked right in it, so stuck with the A4 for the extra room.
Very good looking car though.
330D or 3 litre TDI A4 for me next though.

Whilst i agree the new A3 is a very nice car, the original picture isnt really an accurate representation of what the average TDI A3 you see tons of every day on the commuter run look like.

^^Fairer

Still a good car, but a lot less remarkable than the S3!

Thats still a pre faclift A3.

I personally prefer the sportback which is why we bought one. It looks much better to me although I can appreciate why people like the 3 door.
Shameless pimping of our car ;)

The only bit of the interior I can knock on it is the dodgy lower centre console from the gearstick back. It isn the same quality as the rest of the interior IMO.

Gotta say that is a sweet looking motor, i dont think red does them justice tbh, but thats probably just down to a matter of taste but that colour just looks fantastic! and I love the wheels too Nice one :D

Thanks buddy, the colour is Lava Grey and the wheels were a no cost option (which has subsequently been removed from the configurator  ), shame really as they are nice and just a little bit different from the standard 5 arm Audi wheels.

Dandles, yours is excellent. Thats exactly what a premium hatchback should look like. Unfussy, clean, understated and elegant.

almost bought one of them :o A3 is much nicer looking whether or not it drives aswell, btw has there always been 3dr 1 series? ive seen a few recently

I think the current A3 is great, and the S3 even more so :) It's not a cheap car, but you get what you pay for and it does outstrip the golf etc in terms of quality.

Some different S3 pics coming up :) (Quality isn't the best where they've been cropped due to not having photoshop installed...)

When I was looking at a new car I had a few I could have picked, but I very glad I got my S3.

Dead quick and very fun round corners because of the 4 wheel drive. Can't really fault the quality (last car was a honda civic which was horrible) and I think it looks a lot smarter and sophisticated than 99% of the fast hatchbacks out there.

Having owned a old shape S3, they dont appear to have beefed the new ones up much as from lesser models? The Old S3 had bigger flared arches etc and thicker skirts etc, that looks very similar to a S-Line, but still an awesome car :)

It does, it's mostly rather understated, although it also has to be said pictures don't always do the car justice :)

3 door 1 Series has just come out.

The 1 Series is a real shame. It really does handle very well and it's very pleasurable to drive, although the ride sucks on the Sport models. It just looks horrid.
