How hard can it be to find a 330d...

If your happy to spend the money get a new 5 series as Fox suggested, just a better car in every way. Probably just about get a 525 for the top of end of that budget.

Yeah was quite surprised when I compared the two, the 5 series is just over a foot longer and about 5cm wider.

If it's for the missus, just buy a 5 series and tell her it's a 3 series. :p

Even the 520d is worth a test drive - sure it has a 4 pot engine and 4 pots suck - but it's 184bhp and available for around £20k for a year old example.

I assume "£20k" was a typo and it was meant to be "£30k"?

Am I right in thinking everyone is suggesting I buy a bigger, heavier, slower model than the one I want? It doesn't compute to me!

Take a test drive then it'll compute. The E90 is a great car but it's also an E60 generation car. Things have moved on and the 3 Series won't catch up until the F30 is released next year.

F30 v F10 it would be far harder.

I would gladly take them for a test drive if I could find a dealer that seemed half bothered about the fact that I wanted to buy one of their cars!

An F10 is a truly phenomenal car. My bro (with me in tow) took a 520d M Sport for a test drive last week and I am not a fan of BMWs at all - i cant stress that enough - but they have really upped their game here.

An absolutely fantastic engine and really fast too - it felt a LOT faster than the odd 180bhp its supposed to have - quiet and really smooth, especially the gear changes. And iDrive is just simply awesome. Only gripe i had was that there was not a lot of room in the back, but its by no means cramped. But from an engineering point of view BMW really trounce everybody else, that engine is the bees knees.

The interior was top notch too (the best BMW have done IMO) and impressed me the most - in comparison the M3 next to it, the M3 looked cheap, plastic and nasty tbh - not what id expect to see in such an expensive car. I really cant stand that aluminium dash BMW love to do - thankfully it wasnt in the one we drove, and the wood finish made it look very classy. Hopefully we'll see it in all models soon.

From being a BMW hater, the F10 has really turned my head, and no doubt if they continue this trend a Beemer will definitely be on the list in the future.

No they are saying go and try a new 5 series, i hate BMW's by and large but that was an eye opener for me, as for BMW dealers rubbish as they are i really cant see a single one of them refusing you a test drive.

Lastly you confused the issue with your large budget range, most people willing to spend the thick end of 30k on a car aint really interested in a 16k one or whatever your bottom budget was, because despite how hard you work for your money most people in the market for a 30k car, well they want a 30k car, anyway just an observation i aint digging you out.

Try Knights BMW in Stoke (not that far from you) - they seem keen to sell cars, they let me have a play in an f10 after a recent visit to the parts dept.

Even though I explained I ran an aged e39 that was worthless and I was not interested in a new (or used) BMW from them, I still got 30 minutes on my todd in a 520d!

The e60 520d impressed me, the f10 knocks it for six.

Thanks :) Ill give them a go.

On your recommendations I will certainly go and test drive a F10. I might even book 'an appointment' before I go ;)

Booking before you go is absolutely the way forward. I'd imagine they sell few cars to people who just turn up so tend to stereotype as a result.

I've booked test drives in a number of BMW's and never had any issues test driving them as a result.

I've never got a test drive on the spot without phoning up before hand, even if it is just earlier in the day.

By phoning up before hand over the past few years I've driven: Focus ST, Mini Cooper S, Honda Civic Type R, Astra VXR, Fiat Bravo, Porsche Boxster S, BMW 330i, BMW 335i and a few others.

Ditch the flappy paddles. You'll probably use them about 3 times before you realise they are completely pointless. Maybe in an M3, but not in this applciation

Maybe times have changed, back in 2005 before I purchased the Golf, I test drove: Mini Cooper S, Civic Type R, Golf GTi, Golf GT TDi, Mercedes C220 all without making an appointment.

The Golfs were at the same dealership and I purchased both of them (Gti for me and TDi for sister) so if they are stereotyping they clearly are missing out on some sales!!

You probably can get a test drive by just turning up, but a phone call 2 hours before, saying you've seen car x and want to come have a look I would put money on it guaranteeing a test drive.

Iv never yet ever been refused a test drive on the spot as long as there is a car available to be test driven.

But anyway yea ring first make sure they got one.
