How hard is it to choose a 27" IPS 1440p monitor

Hi guys

I was all set on purchasing a BenQ GW2765HT but I cant help thinking its quite bland looking. It also has a shiny black bezel and I much prefer a matt look.

I definitely want a 2560x1440 27" monitor, preferably IPS. I also would like a screen with a slim bezel.

I wanted something a bit fancy looking not just all black. I love the Dell silver coloured stands.

Be nice if the monitor had inbuilt speakers too but this is not essential.

Monitor will be used for gaming, watching HD movies and the usual other stuff.

My budget is anywhere up to £500.00.

Graphics card I will be using is a gtx980

Ideas please..

Budget is a bit low for the ROG swift, I prefer the MG279Q over that anyway for £500. Even if you wouldn't take advantage of the freesync it's still a good deal for what you get. IPS + 144hz + 1440p.

Otherwise the Dell u2715h is what I'd look at. Lovely bezel on that.

Ur bascially in the same situation as myself and considering the same options

I was dead set on buying the MG279Q but as they have been recalled im stuck now after waiting 3 months for a panel, dont think i can bring myself to buy a 60 hz screen or a TN panel (ive heavily considered both) so just gonna have hold fire until the creases with the ASUS are ironed out

Dell U2515H is a pretty good choice. Pretty cheap, 25" 1440p IPS, factory calibrated. It's not the fastest around for gaming though.

If you're set on something in that range and particularly for gaming and movies would you consider a PLS panel?

I have owned a couple of PLS 27 inch monitors and use mostly IPS at work and I have to say I think PLS wins hands down for me.

I know in theory they are the same technology but I always found the colour fidelity much better on the PLS panels.

Most importantly (certainly on my current Samsung model) blacks are dead black and this is very useful for movies as any that have the black bars at the top and bottom are far more enjoyable.

I have watched movies on IPS before and the glow/panel tech just never seemed dark enough for my liking.

My PLS samsung is the closest to my Plasma TV I have seen on a PC monitor - except maybe for a very few VA panels.

Thanks for all the replies guys although I still have no idea which monitor I am going to get :D

I will consider a PLS panel but I think I want to stay away from TN panels if I can.

I'll keep looking.

EDIT:
What I might do is hold off on the monitor for a short while as I haven't even got my new desk yet. The desk will be situated in my living room and I'm thinking 27" might even be too big.

I'll keep you posted ;)

I ended up going for the Dell U2515H and I am really glad I did. The monitor is absolutely stunning. The silver coloured stand and the bezel design is beautiful and really make the monitor look stylish.

Out of the box the colours appear spot on but then it does advertise itself as being factory calibrated.

I'm now on my 2nd BenQ GW2765HT and will soon be on my third as this one has even worse back light bleed than the first one.

Anyone have any opinions on the Samsung S27D850T as an alternative?

Don't want to shout too quick but my gw2765ht arrived today and other than dropping brightness I've not setup yet,but so far very very impressed at price.
Used to 27 1080p 144hz and 24 1080p,but 1440 even with out the box settings I'm liking a lot!colours and viewing angles even without setup make my other two tn's look so washed out.
Not looked in complete dark room yet but in dim light no dead pixels and best I can tell very minimal light bleed, don't mind a little as imagine majority of ips have a bit, plus this is just for gaming and first impressions are excellent.
Hope you get yours sorted mate,be it another benq or something else.

I setup mine up as per the tftcentral review i do really like the monitor and accept that it will have some BLB but this just has too much, it's a real pain in the whatsit.

Shame that m8,when I look for light bleed I always sit few feet back and look straight on,checked on black screen little while ago in dark, inconclusive if maybe tiny bit bottom corners, but really not much if there is,I expected worse to be honest.
Think setup can wait till Sunday,am too enthralled trying dirt rally locked at 60fps 1440 lol...I'll allow myself new toy syndrome for tonight then get practical sunday:)

Not sure if you've made a decision yet but I have the S27D850T and it is a solid monitor.

I wouldn't say it is the best one out there, I find the bezel a bit clunky - it looks thin in the photos but it actually sticks out so it's bigger than it appears.

The screen is spot on and I love the PLS panel tech so can't fault it there.

The stand is good, very functional but bloody huge!

There's a good 6 inches clearance from the wall behind on mine - as close as I can get it and the front of the stand easily covers 50% of my desk depth.

You'd need to make sure you have a deep desk or set it at the corner of the desk. If you had it directly in front of you there isn't much room left for your keyboard.

To recap, not the best monitor out there but it is by a country mile (IMO) the best value for money. There are better monitors out there but be prepared to pay upwards of £100 more for them.

I got mine for £320 brand new which about 6 months ago was silly low money for a 1440p monitor.

Surprised there's no mention of the BenQ BL2710PT, which is what I have. Very happy with it, near to none BLB and a tiny amount of IPS glow, though I may have just been lucky...

Sure that's a good monitor aswell, think it's same panel as used in my gw2765ht,after a few days use can confirm zero back light bleed and very minimal ips glow, used settings from tftcentral but raised brightness a little for gaming.
Was a little nervous after using fast response tn panels for many years about potential input lag and slower response from an ips,but to be honest even in couple of my fav racing games it's been fine, but then again I'm getting old as gamers go so perhaps I just don't react fast enough to notice much lag now:)

I have the Dell U2715H which I am very pleased with so far.

I don't know how it compares to the others mentioned in this thread mind. Just thought I'd throw it into the mix :D

Whats the difference between the BenQ BL2710PT and the GW2765HT? They seem to be almost identical from what i can tell?

The reason I went for the 2710PT is because I prefer the bezel (the GW2765HT is glossy IIRC) and the 2710PT has better colour accuracy apparently (only slightly but nevertheless). The U2515H is making me want to sell my BL2710PT and get 2 of the Dell's, because I miss dual-monitors, not because I dislike my BenQ! I'm trying to think if it's worth it anyway, the 2 Dell's would cost me £500 and I'm not sure how much I could sell my 2710PT for...
Question for anyone with the Dell, how is quality control? I tried 4 different U2414H's before the BenQ and each one had a yellow tint and/or excessive BLB.

I am no monitor expert but I am more than happy with the U2515H. I don't see any yellow tint or any blb but I have not really looked for it either.

I haven't even messed about with the settings as it seems perfect to me straight out of the box. A little bright maybe but that's all.

I have fitted a soundbar to the monitor too which is a nice touch.
