It's been "cooler" to ski for almost 20 years, ever since the twin tip was invented meant park kids could do park tricks like boarders without the associated downsides of boarding (lifts and flat terrain). When carving skis really took off I guess 15 years ago skiing was far more popular with young people than boarding, even more so now with free-riding and backcountry, though split boarding gives boarders the same access these days.

I always marvel at the likes of Scot Schmidt and Glen Plake doing extreme skiing on 2m straight skis. Changed days these days!
