How hot should a Q6600 Run?

Hey guys,

I was just wondering, how hot should a Q6600 run on a PC? I currently have a Q6600 on a stock cooler and I'm getting 70c, I'm looking at threads and people are getting much less.

Unclocked by the way.

If those are idle temps then theyre pretty high, check that the cooler is seated properly and that the push pins are all making good contact with the mobo.

If that is on standard clock I would suggest re-seating the cpu as those temps are too high for standard clock

Well, I've never even touched the CPU so I'd have no idea how to reseat it. Plus wouldn't I need to buy new Thermal Paste? If I do I'm soon to be buying a new HSF (I'm getting it when I get 250 posts) to cool it more.

Also, I'd like to say ask would it be safe to hacksaw off the giant cone on my cooler? I have a giant cone coming of the CPU Fan which comes out right to the side of the case, it is about 2-5 centimeters from the side case when it is put on, I'm thinking of sawing it off to increase air flow onto the CPU. I've posted this in my other thread about overclockability of a Q6600.

I was pretty much idle, admittedly I had firefox and other programs open but I wasn't doing anything with them. I got the temps from using SpeedFan. And I've never touched the cooler on it so I'm unsure how to do that, I'm not very confident in doing that right now, but as my PC is out of action because of a faulty PSU I wont be using it until Friday, which is hopefully when the PSU should return. I will be purchasing a new HSF before Wednesday anyway, because I plan to OC the Q6600

What case do you have, and how good is the air flow? (i.e. how many many fans intaking air/exhausting air, how messy are the cable's and do they obstruct air movement)

70deg is a stupidly high temperature that not even a badly installed stock HSF should provide.

I have an Antec 300 Case with the stock fans on it, biggest sucking in, 120mm blowing out. They are right by the HSF too. And there are no cables blocking the air flow of the HSF. But like I said, there is a GIANT cone on it really close to the side of the case. I'll take a picture if you want.

The cone on the fan is 2.5cm away from the side case if it was to be put on, with NO holes in the side case too.

I can't upload the images right now, my phone wont bloody connect!

Thats your problem, lots of firefox users having problems lately on these forums

Lol ok, when my new PSU comes back I'll just only have SpeedFan open and I'll see how hot it runs, although by the time it comes back I will have a new cooler, I wont put it in, so I can put it all together at the same time xD.

Firefox seems to be REALLY slow now, I think I might download Chrome, might just be nicer for the 11 year old Laptop I'm on now.

On the stock cooler at stock speed, on a hot summer's day with the CPU under full load, you would see approx 70-75C core temps. But not now and not with the CPU little more than idle.

Depends on what the TJMaxx is set as, most people have it on 95/100 for Q6600s. The hottest mine has been is 93C (TJMaxx @ 100) under IBT when I fluffed resitting my True :p

Definitely too high. To give you an idea I run 40C idle, 65 under load and that's with it overclocked to 3.2GHz, though I do have Tuniq tower cooler.

Don't think anyone's mentioned it so I'll ask, have you got the G0 revision? If not then it's not quite so big a deal, but still too hot at stock speed.
