How hot should a Q6600 Run?

Mine runs at 55-60c under 100% load, overclocked to 3.2, 1.35v, Noctua heatsink. That's with the CPU fan inaudible and case fans on low speed - could get the temps down but there's just no point. Anything below 70c is fine; in reality these chips will go much hotter, but it's not good for longevity or if you're overclocking. Mine was still going at 85c when my CPU fan stopped working.

That's reassuring.

I changed the TJunct to 90 deg [apparently the proper value] and my readings are more realistic. I might have a crack at bumping up the ram voltage [four DIMMs] and OCing it this weekend and see what I get.

when you say its got a big cone round it, is it like a black plastic enclosure round the heatsink?

i had one of those on mine and all it was doing was re-circulating the air round the heatsink rather than round into the case, reseating my heatsink and getting rid of the plastic dropped my idle temp from 60 to 40 :O
