The move from 2d sprites to true 3d games was a logical progression. However I really miss 2d games, even the isometric 2d games had a certain flair. Anyone remember these classic games?

Ranarama
Sorcery
Barbarian
Head over Heels
Batman
Cauldron
Spindizzy

It would be great if they remade some of those old classics... I wonder why they don't? Spindizzy, Head over Heels and Batman would be excellent in true 3d on a XBOX360 or SLI rig.

I think Dizzy in 3d might actually lead to riots on the streets from all the old school players ;)

I'd love to see more of these games...kind of why I spent so much time with emulators..I miss my speccy and even my friend's C64s...

Agree. The PC games industry should be ashamed of itself for letting Nintendo lead the way on retro gaming. I have a Wii, and frankly the best games for it are the old virtual console games.

found this on wiki

A unofficial remake of Spindizzy has been announced in the retrogaming community and is expected to be released in February 2007. This release will feature full 3D graphics, original and new maps, isometric and first-person viewpoints, a new original soundtrack and a map editor. The game will run on Linux, Windows and Mac OS X machines and the source code will be available.

Sorcery, Batman (Oceans isometric version), and Cauldron were fantastic games on my 464.

Actually Cauldron II wasn't a half bad game either. Got that on one of the 'Computer Hits #' compilations (two cassettes).

Batman was class. It's one of the games I try out now and again through emulation as I never did complete it, it's very difficult. It's about as alien to tv Batman as you can get, but I just love the graphics and the spookiness of it.

I can reccomend Exolon on the above site. I got all the way to the bit where you get your tough suit and got killed. Admitedly I use the patch that gives you 9 lives. :p

Modern 3d gaming has really become a gimmick. It rarely adds any more playability to games and in most cases, is its only real selling point. The point of retro games is that most of them are more original and enjoyable than any game coming out these days. Crisis is a great example of this. Its like, "Wow look another 3d first person shooter, how exciting! I bet it will add so much gameplay and just look at those graphics!". Well, the jokes on you fools because its just SSDD. Hopefully crisis will not make anywhere near the amount of money back taken to develop it and games developers will realise that the 3d games bubble has well and truly burst. Of course, whether this will happen or not remains to be seen. ;)

Though, it does irritate me what has happened to the games industry. Yet again, the darwinian laws of capitalism have reduced it to an empty but well-oiled money making machine, rather than an industry full of imagination and good ideas that we all thought it would still be when we were busy playing dizzy on our c64s. Technology has hardly empowered the industry, but more has become an excuse to put out crap products. The days when huge development budgets and massive project cycle times and team sizes needs to end and they need to get back to good ideas rule all. Thats why I like the cheap games on Steam - some great little games on there that are quick and cheap to make, whilst we have to wait until next christmas before seeing the next episode of HL2. Of course, 3d games have their place, but it is annoying how no project could get funding if it wasnt in 3d. Of course, there are exceptions, but they are certainly the minority.

Rant over! ;)

i loved r-type and turrican series and the like , platform games were very original.

There was more emphasis on gameplay and less on graphics, because developers were very limited to how they could implement graphics , but imagination was not limited and thats what they used to out-do eachother, now the intentions have changed from originality to realism.

i commend will wright for his latest game spore, because it brings together both worlds.

Im sure I read somewhere that there is a new Turrican game coming out, I certainly miss the old 8 bit days.
You certainly cant beat the old 2d platformers and shoot em ups, a lot of games these days are so complex and with the 3d gimic can also become a chore to play

Jimbo, thank you so much for that link, really appreciated. Who care;s about horse armour. Head over heels looks fantastic.

I wonder if they have get dexter... :D

I totally agree with you davecarter. By the time I have got to grips with the controls and gui on a modern 3d game I could have completed an old 8bit game... Where's the fun in learning an interface? Where's my 2 button microswitch joystick (remember those!)

Update: Playing Head over Heels right now. Really faithfull, and I just love the graphics and lighting. Seems wild playing a 8bit game in full colour with shadows and no slowdown when there are more than 3 sprites...

They really should remake some old 8 bit classics. Spindizzy is just asking for it...

Dizzy was immense, I wouldn't like to see remakes of the old games to be honest they would be ruined I think in 3D. Games back then were just so different to todays games. Memories!

It was Batman that started it all for me. A mate and his wife moved in with us for a few days while they were in between houses. He had an Amstrad CPC464 and he showed me Batman. Have never stop playing games or being interested in computers since. Loved Head over Heels as well.
