How liberating, I think

I have been a member of Facebook and a daily user for quite some time, since 2006/7 and right now I just had the urge to delete my account, just to see what life is like without it, i'm no addict, I dont put serious life related content and updates on there, I usually just laugh at the people that do. I used it to communicate with my close mates and post things of interest, cars, gaming etc

However, I had 200 friends, most are people I dont speak to anymore, I was getting grief off a girl who didnt like the fact that I didnt want to see her again and other smaller contributing factors, I just thought to myself, delete it, its just a website, why do people take it so seriously anyway, so I did and now I feel quite liberated :o

I know people are going to read this and "cool story bro" "so what" etc etc but i'm sure there are others who might assess their usage as in "I couldnt do that" or "I might consider doing that" etc etc

Ditched my account about 6 months after it got ridiculously big and people started asking you "are you on Facebook?" Haven't looked back, and I take a small pleasure in saying "no".

The only thing that riles about it now is people who post my picture on Facebook from group shots, I'm not on Facebook by choice. That does not mean it's still OK to post my picture up on there. :(

I had a friend who did a similar thing, he was back within a few months.

It's like anything technology/internet based. You use it so much it becomes part of the furniture and you wonder how you would ever get along without it.

Then you go on holiday or just take a break from all tech related things and you realise how easy it is and that the world doesn't stop revolving :)

Jesus man just don't log in ? Its not face books fault - you are an addict or something...

its like saying im addicted to my telephone.... Im addicted to the phone book... hows that?

Ignoring the other posts as predictable

I doubt i'll last 6 months :o

I will end up going back eventually, or use it as a mate does, activate and deactivate on every once a week visit etc

Its funny because literally two mins after I posted this I get an email from one of my best mates saying "just tried to message you on facebook"

I dont think you get it, see below and maybe read my original post again

Why would you feel liberated if you weren't addicted to it on some level?

Because you feel socially required to check updates/reply to friends for worry of "snubbing" them like ignoring their texts.

As answered here, obvious really.

If you were in a public place, then they can do what they like with a picture of you. Consent is implied.

Noted. Will wear a mask out of an evening, seems to be the only way to stop my picture ending up on Facebook. :( It's not I don't consent my picture being taken, or posted on a site. Just more the fact it's on Facebook specifically.

It's more like 3 years since I was on there. :)

It is a good way of keeping in touch.

Even if it's just a hand full of people.

Yeh people are douchebags on it and treat it like Myspace, posing, epic short stories as their status, massive amounts of information posted about them.

But you can just use it as another form of communication.

tbh I need to thin my friends list, shave out the people I probably won't speak to anymore

I wouldn't delete mine, its a fantastic way to keep in touch with people, both past and present friends. Hate it all you like, but I have pretty much every application disabled from my homepage, maximum privacy settings and annoying people blocked. Seems to work out fine for me :)

I never said I hated it?

I get the impression some people are not quite getting this although some are but i'll spell the point out regardless

I want to see what life is like without it after spending so long with it as a part of my life, its not always been around and I can barely remember what it was like beforehand so to refresh my memory, I deleted my account.

Yeh the minimal look is best

I deleted mine a while back, I could walk past people in the street that were on my friends list and they would not speak but are happy to be on your friends list. Sad really.

Facebook is a great tool. Just a general overview of friends and family. If you don't like certain 'friends', you can delete them.

BUT its saving grace is 'Photos'.
If you have that many friends, do as my friend* does and you get to view bikini clad girls in 'friends of friends' photos from holiday snaps.
