How logical would it be for me to build my own PC?

I'm looking to spend around £1500 on a custom pc, though I feel compelled to build this pc myself rather than have OCUK assemble it for me, I like the idea of having a hobble/project on the side and I also like the thought of gaining that self satisfaction that comes along with it too. Though the only experience I've had with system hardware is replacing the power supply, installing RAM and installing Graphics cards(nvidia 7900gs, 7300LE..) would it be a little far fetched of me to attempt to build myself my own pc and risk £1500?

Which things may I come to a cross roads with? I've only dealt with replacing hardware in basic builds.

Also, do you need a system specced? I am not the best in this area, I like looking at specs, but not too experienced building them, I can have a go if you wish though.

Building your own pc is fare from complicated as some may believe. There is tons and tons of guides and walkthroughs on youtube and here on OC.

If i had to do it again for the first time i would take my time and this may mean hours. Make sure you know how you want your cables to run inside your case before putting hardware in. This will save you a lot of hassle and also if done right give you better airflow.

Make sure you do not put your bare hardware on static/conducting surfaces. The carpet is offlimit unless you have something that is anti static between the surface and the hardware(the pcb/print surface, nothing will happen if you put a gfx on the side where the fans are).

Mounting the cpu, you want to look for the small markers on it and the motherboard. Dont worry its fool proof but delicate. Pins can be bent very easily if handled to rough or forced.

The last thing from the top of my head would be the mounting of the cpu cooler and the paste between it and the CPU. Again plenty of guides to be found depending on what paste you choose. Just remember more is not always better.

Im sure many will come up with additional advice or correction if i missed something important.

Blow away with the quick responses, If anyone feels like they want to put a system together, it would be appreciated, regardless of this I'm going to wait for Haswell to be released for obvious reasons though if affordable I'd be tempted to splash out on it.

I would have someone double check to see if that would work, but that's what I come up with, little over, but if you don't need an Optical Drive it comes pretty close. If someone who knows more about computers than me could check that, that would be good.

EDIT:- Also £85 on a case, so if you would choose a lower priced one, then that would turn out cheaper.

The sense of excitement, worry and anticipation is intoxicating. Also very satisfying when successful.

building your own is 99% idiot proof as most cables can only be plugged into the slot they are ment to go into. Follow the manual and take your time. The feeling when you have completed it will be worth it.
