Hi guys,

Im in the Navy and want to start using the gym here to start to get more fit, and have a better physical appearance.

Now I really cannot be arsed to go to the gym, but because of my job and for a better looking body, I think I have to start making an effort.

Im hoping to start going 3 times a week maybe an hour a time. Doing very weights. Now when do you think I would start to see results both in physical appearance and overall fitness?

Or is it a how long is a piece of string sort of question? :)

To be honest, I think you yourself will see noticeable change within a couple of months (if you do things properly) not big but noticeable, it may take a while for others to notice though. More important is how you are approaching it, you need to go because you want to and because you enjoy it, not because you think you should, the way you are thinking about it now may just lead to frustration, boredom and ultimately giving in.

The best thing to do (IMO) is to go along to the gym and get some instruction and do a bit of trial and error, see what you enjoy and feel you could happily continue with before you decide to commit to it.

Also read the sticky, it's a brilliant resource.

did you read GordyR's Beginners Guide to Bodybuilding ?

its one of the stickys and if i remember right it had some suggested body building routines.

you would probably see some small changes after a few months but feel a lot bigger than you look.

well if you eat well and work hard in the gym, you can start seeing visible results in 2 months.
I made the biggest progress in my first 6 months, and after that it went slooooooooooooow lol.

You sound like you can't really be bothered to put the effort in but want to reak the results. You get out what you put in, it's very simple.

Address you diet, get it clean and spot on, train hard and rest well and I'd say within a few months you should have some noticeable difference. Though it depends entirely on you, what you do and your genetics as to what kind of differences you see. Strength initially increases without much effort.

I am going to break from the crowd a bit here and say over the first 3-4 weeks you will notice fairly significant changes in shape.

You will reactivate muscles that have been mostly sleeping, increasing blood flow causing them to swell and repair damage. You will also see a bit of weight loss. You will most probably look better depending on where you are starting from and feel better that you are doing something and can see some results.

After this period the effects of your training will slow down as your body adapts to the new work forced upon it. This is the first psychological hump to get over. A lot of people see the changes slow down and loose motivation.

This is all of course as long as you exercise regularly (3+ times a week), for a reasonible period of time / intensity and have a good diet supporting the efforts you are making.
