Hi Guys

How long do you think it will be before your mobile could replace your home computer?

The device I want is a smartphone that is as powerful as my laptop that I can use as a smartphone when out and about, then at home I can plug in a monitor and keyboard and use it as my main home computer.

Data would probably be stored online or fully backed up at home just in case the device was lost.

Do you think this will happen? If so, how long will it take? What are the main technology limitations at the moment?

Thanks

Now? you can get keyboards already and output HD resolutions to a monitor/tv. All the cloud stuff is already in place (spotify, Google docs etc)

As for a full replacement for a home pc, I'd say 2 to 3 years (check out the tri/quad core sample pcbs)

What keyboards can you get and for which phones? Which phones provide monitor output?

Thanks

Most Apple mobile devices. Info Here
Some Android mobile devices. Info Here
Even older Nokia's running symbian. Info Here

Sorry about some of the sources, just searched for them just to have a source confirming the many possibilities

Edit: Just re-read, monitor out :o Can't be far off if not already possible by just using an adapter with the cables that you can already use for the TV out.
Likewise, just googling bluetooth keyboard for iPhone, Andriod and mobile phones provides multiple sources for information on which phones support keyboards.

My fav is the slot in dell streak keyboard, the HTC evo has an hdmi output socket, the n8 has demoed running on a tv (using its camera to turn the tv into a touch screen)

Edit: doesn't the desire HD and z have a wireless hdmi link?

Quake 3 has been hacked to run on a Nokia N95, outputting to a TV and using a mouse/keyboard for control.

The main problem is that smartphone UIs aren't designed for big screens and PC-style controls. Perhaps there's a gap in the market for an adventurous manufacturer? Past projects like Palm's Foleo have been successful though.

Depends who your talking about, most ppl I know don't have desktops anymore.

Check out the latest click episode bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00txymh/Click_18_09_2010/

It shows a prototype Qualcomm phone displaying 4 HD movies at once, the average Joe doesn't need any more power than that? :D

In what resolution though? It's all well and good for a smart phone to be able to display 4 HD movies on a 3-4" screen but try upsizing the resolution to 1080p for 24" monitors or even larger and it's a whole different ballgame. Add high resolution gaming into the equation and phones are a long way off doing it.

When you can run Illustrator, Photoshop and AutoCAD in combination with large files, smoothly.

Average joe wants BookFace and p0rn though...

Markets grow and shrink, it will be a while before the PC as we know it will be replaced. An iPad like device with wireless HDMI, BT keyboard and touchpad/mouse would be awesome. But we can't trust Apple to produce it with the kind of flexibility Windows/Linux offers...

Here's a Vid of the HTC Evo playing 720p vids over hdmi (don't forget it's got a old/crappy gpu) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dw0aga0G0Gg&feature=related

The newer chips will output 1080p with ease, maybe even the desire HD?
