How long did it take you to have your first proper bump?

What happened? It isn't the speed that matters, it is how quickly the accident causes you to stop. If you get slowed down by some nice bushes and some very young trees it could almost be silky smooth!

The less experience you have, the less likely you're going to be able to anticipate what will happen in any given situation. You don't know what to look for, so it's harder to be aware of what poses a potential threat or to intuit what the outcome of a particular move will be.

That combined with youthful over-exuberance = more likelihood of a prang.

Very true. I believe learning to drive and learning to pass your test are very different things, and the former can only come with many miles under your belt.

While it is a sweeping generalisation, I do think young, male drivers are more prone to crash for some of the reasons you highlight. I think insurance companies would probably agree too. I strongly disagreed when I was 17 of course as I thought I was God's gift to driving. Then I wrote my car off and it was the same story for more than half of my mates, who had prangs in the first year of driving. Its the reason why when anyone asks me to recommend a first car, I will invariably tell them to get a cheap low insurance car for a year that they can get some miles under their belt with and either build up NCB or lose less money when they write it off.

About 6moths, understeered into a kerb (in a Corsa obviously). Knackered suspension, was never straight again. Parents part-ex'd it in the end :p

Nothing major, but after 2 yrs my wheels locked on some ice, sending me slowly forwards into the verge, rather than round the slight bend  . Unluckily, I scraped along a barbed wire fence, so needed a bit of paint repair

I have had an accident once every year, for the past 4 years. My insurance renewal came in this week (£3705 and £1000 excess) and its come to a point where I can't afford insurance anymore. :(

:D Very true...

I was very lucky, I was on a GSXR 750 and lost the front end (totally my own fault). Slid on my side for about 100yds, demolished a footpath sign with my back and landed face down in the hedgerow. Skinned my knuckle to the bone and bruised the base of my spine. Bike was totalled, went end over end and spread bits all over the place, snapped frame, forks bent double, not pretty.....

3 years 7 months, minor bump 5-10mph.
Was so close to being able to protect the NCB :(

About a year, nothing major though. Hit another car's wing-mirror on a narrow country lane. £10 for a new piece of glass I think it was.

Parked in the scenery more often than I care to remember. Couldn't give a crap. To find the limit sometimes you inadvertantly cross it :p
