How long do red light cameras take to get armed?

Just curious. Was privy to a police chase today on the A1 of all places, the 'bad guy' made it on amber and the copper was about half way over the line before it went red, no flash..ok THEN some random Micra did a quick left turn on dead red with no resulting flash, prolly just after the copper went over. I've seen this camera flash as recently as Saturday so its likely live, what gives? :D

I suspect the time can be set on an individual basis, depending on the speed of the road etc

I was always under the impression there was a "grace" period of a few milliseconds from the red light showing to the camera "arming"

Normally sub 1 second after the lights turn red.

I hate red light cameras. Always put me on edge.

In the name of God, why? Have you tried stopping when the lights are still amber? I find it very easy to do and it completely removes the risk of running a red.

i think its more the fear of the lights changing when you have passed the time of stopping normally.

i got caught via one and it put me on edge a little when ever i go through that set of lights.

I'm sure someone on here was done for in the region of 1 second.

Perhaps the typical internet exaggeration, perhaps regional differences...

I've seen people go through red lights around here just after they have gone to red without being flashed, so it's not instantaneous

I've heard from various people that it's 2 seconds after it turns Red. As suggested as well not all of them are on 24/7. There is one on my way back from work at a huge roundabout and the amount of times i've stopped at the lights and seen people skip it as it has changed to red I have never seen it flash. I've even seen someone decide to quickly make a run through the lights as the road was clear while it was still on red, and still it did not flash. I know it must flash sometime as it has those strips in the road just above the white line which is used to monitor any cars that go over it while the camera is armed. Another one near I live I have seen flash many times at people skipping the red light.

The most amusing one I've seen is one of those people who insists on creeping forward at red lights, as if it's going to make them change quicker. He just crept a bit too far and it flashed, that'll teach him to be more patient :D

haha

I don't think he'd have got done though.

As the camera flashes twice and takes two pictures, one when the car crosses the line and then a second of the car actually driving through the lights.

I watched someone get rear ended when they stopped for the fear of getting caught by these cameras.

The cameras by the gloucestershire ring road always puts me on edge as your approaching them quite fast and have to pre plan if there going to change.
