how long does disk defragging take ???

I put mine onto disk defrag, i only have a 200gb seagate barracuda 7200.10 and i came back to it 4 hours later............ 3% completed :eek:

Its taking it 10 mins or so to "move blahblah.htm(1)" :confused:
 
using perfect disk the longest a 250GB drive has taken me is around an hour and a half.

But I suppose the times depend on the amount of space used/left, the program being used and the cpu (although less so)
 
It will depend on how much data you have on the HDD, which defrag program you are using, how much free space you have and if there is compression used on the volume....

However 4 hours does seem long, try another drfrag program or the contig/Power Defragmenter combination in the Defrag/HDD Monitoring Software section. :)
 
you may find if it nealry full and heavily fragged that it smoving stuff in the littel space it has which is slow.

Try to get a this program, its brilliant! Ultimate Defragger 1.44
 
Since installing vista I havn't even been able to complete a defrag because it has taken so long.

And this is only on a 36Gb Raptor with 25% free. :confused:
 
Windows defragging tools always seem to take an age, that is part of the reason that an alternate market has sprung up. It is one of the reasons that I never bother to defrag my hard drives, that and the fact that NTFS is much better about not fragmenting files than Fat32 ever was.

Nazbit, why not try another defragger to see if it speeds up the process (it almost certainly will).

Let me guess, fat32?
My 500gb raid0 does it in 30 mins being an ntfs drive, while one of my older fat32 partitions just takes too long, I never bothered anymore, 1 defrag overnight, I wake up after 10 hrs, 2%, sheez, never botehred defragging it after.
 
I use Diskeeper and set a scheduled defrag every night at 2am on my C: partiton (40gb) and I think it takes 2-3mins. 300GB Seagate 7200.9 takes about 25-30mins or so with 50% free.

went out and left powermagic doing it, done and loads of free space now :D

Yeh I will do, to be honest I wasn't really aware that there were decent third party tools.

I will take a look at the ones mentioned in this thread.

IIRC Diskeeper is actually the "pro" version of windows disk defragmentor, same developer anyway I am sure.
 
with diskeeper theres an option to defrag on next format, use that, less disruption, btw with fat32 some programs make it reset, once AGES ago with windows 98 a 3.2gb disk i left it defragging for 3 days straight before i realised it kept resetting due to changes on the disk, had to ctrl alt del everything before itd move :o

edit: also defragging before windows fully starts defrags the mft and pagefile too :D

Its worth running CCleaner or similar to clear out all the temp files, as they take a long time to defrag (which is pointless as well anyway :)).
