How long does engine oil keep?

My S60 D5 takes 0w30, which is bloody expensive. However on the auction site you can get 20 litres of Castrol Edge fully synth 0w30 for £150ish.

Obviously this will last me about 3 years, so will it keep that long if stored reasonably well?

Thanks :)

Thats a good deal too.

The ebay stuff is in a 20l container. Won't need any for a while though as it's a 12k service interval.

Rebranded Castrol what?

good point.

What oils do Castrol do now? Edge is what's recommended for mine on the 12k service interval. There is another one for engines with an 18k interval, can't remember what it's called.

Most trade counters can be blagged. I've done it many times :)

3 years is about the shelf life of opened engine oil. Over time oil absorbs moisture & it'll lose its ability to lubricate effectively.

Should last if it is stored in the right conditions i.e not in direct sunlight.

Only issue with storage is that water in the oil can cause the detergents to drop out. This will from a white powder on the bottom.

As long as nothing has dropped out to the bottom of the can then it's fine.

I emailed Castrol a few weeks regarding this. Here is their reply: -

Hi

Although there are no guarantees, or hard and fast limits - we would
suggest a rule of thumb of 3 years from the fill date on the pack would
be a suitable recommendation. We would normally suggest buying only as
much as you need for a job - that way you are always using fresh
product. Over time specifications can change and products can be
improved or enhanced, so by buying new oil each time you need it, you
are guaranteed to get the best possible product.

Kind regards

And for cheap oil - http://www.nielsencdg.co.uk/acatalog/Car_Castrol_Edge_Turbo_Diesel_0W-30_Engine_Oil_4L_1L_FREE.html - 20 litres here works out around 158 delivered.

Not sure as I'm not at work but I'll look it up. There are some castrol oils only available as bulk oils the D5 might have one of those.

Am I being stupid or isn't TPS Trade only? As in accounts / VAT / lots of business etc.

We have a business account with them, yeah they are set up for the trade but I'd imagine if you went into one of there branches with cash in your hand they'd be daft to turn down a sale.

None of you guys know anyone with a Costco card, the branded oils are very cheap,I got fully synt Mobil one for £21, Castrol GTX for my moms E220 CDI (2*4.5l) were £30ish.

As above, Mobil one fully synthetic for petrol and diesel (0W-40 - i think) are both around £22 (4 litres)

Castrol Magnatec: 5W-30 (semi) - £18 for 4 litres
10W-40 (semi) - £30 for 2 packs of 4 litres

They also sell those Goodyear wiper blades that are flat all the way across (you know what I mean), picked up a couple for the MX-5 for around £8 each
