I purchased a computer item, which after six months use, developed a fault.
I contacted the retailer who said to send it back to them and they would send it back to Intel for inspection.
After about four weeks the retailer contacted me to say that Intel had found it faulty and they would replace it like for like as soon as the retailer got some more stock in.
This has now stretched to 10 weeks since the faulty product was sent back and the only reply from the retailer is that the stock was expected some time this week, but still no sign of any coming in.

Is this amount of time reasonable or should I be seeking a refund if they cannot supply a replacement in a reasonable time.

Thanks for your replies, but how do I stand legally as the product developed the fault after six months and was sent back to Intel who agreed it was faulty and the retailer informed me they would replace it when they got some more stock in.
How long after buying a product that develops a fault after six months can you demand your money back.

It's possible that you can't demand a complete refund since you had some use out of it*. However, they are definitely** 'beyond reasonable' in replacing or repairing. So you are within your rights to demand a refund, but they probably don't have to give a complete refund.

* I think you can only demand a complete refund if the goods have not been accepted.
** Only a judge can really make this determination.

a normal rma takes upto 28 days at most places.

so while it can be quicker that is the avg.any longer i would be fuming.:D

* trackrat calls Retailer *

trackrat: Retailer, did you order the RMA?

Retailer: You want answers?

trackrat: I think I'm entitled to.

Retailer: You want answers?

trackrat: I want the truth!

Retailer: You can't handle the truth!
[pauses]

Retailer: Son, we live in a world that has PCs, and those PCs have to be guarded by men with warranties. Who's gonna do it? You? I have a greater responsibility than you could possibly fathom. You weep for RAM prices, and you curse the NVIDA/AMD gouging. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know. That your RMA, while tragic, probably saved me money. And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves me money.

You don't want the truth because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on that wall, you need me on that wall. We use words like honor, code, loyalty. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punchline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very poor warranty that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said thank you, and went on your way, Otherwise, I suggest you pick a new retail outlet, and order through them. Either way, I don't give a damn what you think you are entitled to.

trackrat: Did you order the RMA?

Retailer: I did the job I...

trackrat: DID YOU ORDER THE RMA?

Retailer: You're Goddamn right I didn't!

if this was a pregnancy, you would be giving it a name by now, and possibly had two trips to Mothercare and one trip to IKEA.

On reading up the sale of goods act which applied at the time of purchase, it would appear that Amleto is correct.
I have enjoyed reading the other comments as well.
I will see what this week brings before taking any further action.

Let us know how you get on.
10 weeks is deffo too long and I would have been asking questions after the first week they said they would replace.

Mags wins the thread again.

Nothing can better that on tha Internets today so I'm going for a soy latte and vegan muffin.

10/10 magnolia.

I think there is a limit on waiting of about 4 weeks approx , they are obliged to replace within
this time period or refund if they cannot

I got in touch with the retailer this morning and although the item was over six months old they have agreed to give me a full refund because of the time it has taken to resolve this issue.
So thanks to everyone who replied, even the jocular ones.
