How long is your commute and £££?

Chris Evans on way in, Simon Mayo on way home, no one in my space, gives me time to remove work stress before facing family stress, only bummer is can't have a beer until i get home :(
 
you're very lucky to have such a reliable train line. i used to take the train from Reading to Culham for about ~2years. infrequent service for Culham Station, frequent delays. even had times where the train just didn't stop at culham, so you'd have to wait another hour for the next one. :eek:
really wish we had the swiss or german train network here :(

Yes indeed. The reliability, consistent journey times and frequency (every 15 minutes in rush hour) together with the comfort make a huge difference to quality of life (well the commuting part of it at least). From Woking and West Dulwich I used to be stood up with elbows digging in all around me and needed to plan for it always being held up for some reason or another. I'm Swiss and HS1 is the closest to a modern Swiss or German train network I know. Not only does it run on its own dedicated track but at St Pancras it has its own dedicated platforms so it really is isolated off from the rest of the network.

The only real downside is that it is not great for getting to the M3/M4 corridor where a lot of my industry is based and also lousy for Heathrow. But that will change when the Elizabeth line opens in 2019 since every HS1 train stops at Stratford where you'll be able to change to go West.

i used to live near zurich in my younger years and never really appreciated their network until i moved to the uk.
remember getting annoyed when the train said it's 3mins late :D
 
Recently moved from a 45 min door to door commute in London Zone 2 to a 1hr15 commute in zone 6 - I think the costs increased from £135 to £230 a month.

Zone 6 on my particular line is fantastic - it's the beginning of the line and there's always a train and a seat waiting for me in the morning!

This move was also a bit of tester, to try out a longer commute before potentially moving further out but switching to HS1 so overall journey time won't change - but monthly cost will probably triple.
 
6.5miles each way. I commute on bicycle so no fuel cost. I do replace chain / cassette / cables once a year though but I receive benefits from my company to purchase this so my outgoings for commuting are still minimal.

I couldn't hack commuting in a car in Southampton during rush hour, or trying to get out of Southampton from around 7:30am onwards. The M27 / M3 turn into car parks. The local roads aren't much better either. Unfortunately for me I had to travel from Sholing to Lordswood in my car one day a few months ago during the morning rush hour. My average speed.....6mph :( To think people choose to sit in that on a daily basis. I can't compute it as most people would better that on bicycle! Instead though everyone wants to clog the roads with their car :( Should be a blanket ban on commuting to work in a car if you live within 7.5miles of your place of employment excluding use of motorways. Or maybe allow use of a car one day a week so employees could take in required clothing etc for the week on that day. Employers would also need to support the needs of the employees, i.e. showers, storage facilities etc. Sooner it starts happening the better :D
 
Has recently become a 6 or 7 mile round trip. Unfortunately the roads around here are quite busy, and if you're traveling around 8am or 5pm, the roads are terrible. I generally am outside these times which is good, but nevertheless i often commute by motorcycle just incase i do end up travelling at these times. Cheaper on fuel too and to be honest, sitting in traffic in a 340i makes me sad; such a waste :(
