How long should a Console last ?

had two TVs die recently both a bit over a year old and out of guarantee
utter crap build quality

this has made me consider a extended warranty on my next TV but maybe this is what they are trying to get me to do if a brand does this to me i will never buy there stuff again this goes for consoles as well

A new decent LCD should last 8 - 12 years assuming it's not idle 24/7 in that case about 3.5 years.

I agree when I have trouble with a certain company I'll see if I can give them another chance, carries on, I switch elsewhere.

But manufacturers do it on purpose though to get more revenue, like GHD straighteners for example, my sister has gone through 3 of them in as many years. These are £100 straightener, they use cheap components in them to only last like a year.
My gf has had her's for ~3 years iirc. Uses it almost daily. Never had a problem.

arghhhh

i see the mega drive and snes parade is out again :p

they have no moving parts and hardly use any enegery/produce any heat

there isnt even many soldered wire connections or ribbon cables etc

theres very very little to go wrong

most the problems with ps2s where with laser movement.

havent heard of problems with gamecubes

my ps one still works now after years of abuse

original xbox seemed to do ok

i dont see why a console shouldnt last 5 years

A console should last at least as long as it takes for its successor (from the same manufacturer) to be on the market.

So if Sony make a PS2 and a PS3 is not released for 6 years I would expect the PS2 to last until then (6 years). I don't think manufacturers can expect us to buy a replacement unit in the lifespan of the original product, hence, it should be built to last accordingly. (If you see what I mean).

I expect my 360 to last until the next gen comes out, at least! Probably wont happen, but thats what I expect from 270 quids worth of gear. And I don't think its unreasonable.

That's exactly how long i think it should last for, when your paying a certain amount for anything really you expect it to last for a while, i don't see how it should be any different with consoles.

My NES still works but my PS thats hardly ever moved or been used is half dead. Get massive sparks in side in when you turn it on.

exactly.. your buying a reputable named brand be it a console,tv,dvd,stereo.. you buy good brands to last.. obviously there are good and bad in products.. i will not buy anything other than panasonic for viewing as they have earnt my loyalty .. technics (panasonic badges up) same.. abit for motherboards.. when you buy things and they do what they say they will do.. then go that bit extra..then hey they have my vote.. i`ve had 2 sony consoles ps and ps2 both bought within 3-4 months of release.. and still going strong.. xbox 1 going great after 3 yrs.. i`d expect most of these things to work for 5 to 10yrs longer.. the thing is technology is advancing quick so can you rely on things working for ever.. why do they ask you for extended warranty? easy money or not trusting the products?

They should last at least until the next generation of consoles come along, no one should have to buy two of the same console per generation.
