Most likely our children's children will have life spans far longer than ours due to gene treatments etc. It's not beyond belief even in our lifetimes we'll see treatments to slow down the aging process in someways.

So when do you think humans will have lifespans increased to say well beyond 200-300years for example? And are you in anyway jealous that these individuals will have hundreds and hundreds of years to live, while we have only just a fraction of that?

ps: Yes I know 200-300years isn't immortality, but its certainly a step in the right direction :)

if all those programs about how we are eating ourselves to an early death is true, i think the answer is when someone invents a time machine and changes history, that when we'll be immortal

telomerase gets my money, my rough understanding is it essentially adds additional divisions (telomeres) to our DNA telling it to carry on doubling after it would normal stop.

interested me enough to read about it at work the other day for 10 mins :)

One of the main blocks is a fundamental problem with chromosomal replication because the protective telomeres shorten with each division. Telomeres set a cellular limit on lifespan as when they reach a critical length, further division is impossible.

Even if I became immortal I don't think I'd ever love another man as much as I love Justin and that breaks my heart. Even if I literally never died he would still stick with that trashy tramp Jessica Biel and be all like, "Yeah, I'm happy with this woman who doesn't even love my a third as much as magnolia does, plus she doesn't put out whenever I want." I mean, he'd probably use other words because he's clever but gosh, what would I do? Write even more JT fanfics where I win him over and we end up pounding at the sweaty climax? That would be ok, thinking about it. At least I'd get to enjoy him for longer but it'd be a bitter sweet ending, a hollow victory.

So in summary, immortality is a terrible idea and almost certainly bad science.

What's the obsession with living longer? Have none of you ever seen inside an old people's home? Sitting in incontinence pads slurping porridge 18hrs a day watching endless repeats of day-time TV?

I really don't get it.

Given the potentially catastrophic economic and physical state of the planet in the (possibly) near future, I don't envy those that may have to live in it even for a short time!

I recall reading somewhere sometime that some scientist(s) reckoned that a child born today could live to be over 300. ie given the advancement of medicine, by the time that child comes to current max age (say 70) medical science will mean that life expectancy will be much higher.

Sorry for the vagueness of this post. I tried googling for the source.

you wouldnt get old with telomerase, that's the point.

Never. Biologically, immortality is highly implausible. Most likely human lifespan will top out somewhere around 130-150 years.

I think the idea is you stop aging at say 30 rather than stop aging at 90. So you're effictively permanently in your prime. Which would rock.

I think people chasing immortality want to be immortal in their peak years, not at the end of there lives.

OT: I always wonder if there would ever be an advance in science that could stop hair growing and retain it at a certain desired length.

I'm already lazy enough as it is. The only thing that motivates me to make myself better is my disappearing youth! I'll die in my 70/80's thank you, if before, it better be spectacular.
