How long to copy 10gb of data from one HDD to another?

In the time its taken you to post a reply from your original post you could have copied 10GB over several times.

LOL! It's taking me all this time to organise all these files and folders that I'm about to transfer to my spare backup disk! ;)

Wow, just copied over 5 gigs in 12 minutes!! I forget how advanced technology is! The last time I copied files over I remember sitting for hours waiting!!

Thanks guys!

There are too many variables to give even an estimate of how long it'll take.

Not all 7200rpm disks are the same. I've had 14Gb 7200rpm disks that are probably a quarter of the speed of current 7200rpm drives.

10Gb in a few files will take far less time than 10Gb in a few thousand files as the disk heads have to move to update the FAT / NTFS logs with each file.

It depends what else is being done on the machine that may access the disk and hence contend with the copy.

Best advice - just do the copy and wait till it's done.
