How long will this system last if I invest in it?

Ok, I have come up with my final build list, and I've thought about it, and come up with the idea that I will save all my money and invest into this pc. But Im spending a lot for my age (14) and I am hoping this will last very long. And tell me if there are things in it that I dont need and will help lower the price. But I think the price of the processor will lower as Ivy bridge comes out.
Used for: Video editing (After effects & Sony Vegas), Graphics Design (Photoshop), Gaming (Call of duty's, BF3)
Resolution: 1920 x 1080
What I can use from old system: DVD Rewriter, 500GB HDD, 1 Led case fan.
And can I get some money back by selling these on the mm: AMD Athlon II X3, MSI 870-C45, 8400GS.

Systems change all the time, but that system should help to give some longevity, I would change the drive to the Samsung F3 1tb offers pretty much the same performance for less as the WD Drive.
 
I have just passed the 4 year mark with my current PC and I am now looking to do a fresh build. Looks like a good build.
 
Tbh I'm 15, and I will be spending £1000 ish on my build, but then I will probably be upgrading and investing in it on a regular basis...
 
Over the last few years the rate of hardware improvement compared to software utilisation has meant PCs are lasting longer before becoming obselete. I built a Q6600 rig like 3 years ago, and only now upgraded - not because my rig was unable to play games at high or anything, but because I got into streaming games and needed that extra oomph - but I suspect that for the most part (excluding resource hogs like BF3) that it'd still be fine for another few years.
Though, tesselation has started being used which is somewhat taxing even on the most powerful GPUs so depending on how that developes you may be looking at a GPU upgrade in the next few years - but the rest of the rig should be fine for around 5 years imho.
I seem to have mumbled a lot more than I planned, short answer; approx 3-5 years.
Edit: Also, waiting a few months for IvyBridge could add a little more longevity ;)
 
A PC build lasts as long as you can withhold the itch to tinker with it.

That 2600k / GTX580 will comfortably play BF3 now, but when the next Crysis, COD, BF comes out (year or 2 down the line), people on this forum will start talking about IvyBridge + Keplar.

But those technologies are for next year, and if you have the itch now - that's probably too long to wait.
 
If I was in OP's position, I'd drop the 2600K down to the 2500K, memory from 16GB down to 8GB, and the graphic card to GTX570 2560MB instead.

The SandyBridge 2500K should last for many years, whereas if the GTX570 2560MB start to struggle in the future, I'd be able to pick up another GTX570 2560MB at a lower price in the future (due to price drop, of may be getting 2nd hand) to SLI. Alternatively, could get a GTX580 3GB right now, but I don't really think they worth the price premium comparing to the GTX570.

Yeah the 2500K should last a few years with a decent OC, or even you are still able to upgrade to IB...

For me at Xmas i will probably get the i5, and a 7000 series card. Then upgrade to IB later next year...

I would also consider the Corsair Carbide 400R. It's a good functional case. Not the prettiest though.

If you go air cooling, get some low profile ram.

Also I would like to be able to get 250 FPS in Cod4 at 1280 x 720. Everything on medium? And 60 FPS Constant in WoW. And Skyrim, I would like to run that smoothly with eye candy.
