Depends on what's being replaced, and how often you play games. An enthusiast won't want to wait too long, whereas the type that upgrades every few years might be happier to bide their time..

Wait a year then something new comes out couple of months later?

Madness !!!!!

All depends on how you look at it. You are stating the obvious but failing to consider there are people with different wants and needs. Not everyone will want to upgrade every time a new GPU comes out. Some do, even if it is a 10% performance jump.

Many will be happy to wait until a GPU comes out that offers say 50%+ improvement over their old card and be in the same price range as what they originally paid for the card they have. Also some will take into account and will wait for a new fabrication process or tech like hbm to come out before upgrading.

It is all relative at the end of the day. The poll clearly shows this.

Cracks me up when people think it is "madness" because it does not fit their personal wants/needs. Bit like those who swear by 21:9 aspect ratio. Those poor sods keep torturing themselves. They have to wait for a fix on many occasions when games come out, Deus Ex:MD comes to mind of recent. lol. :p;):D

But things always come out, say for example I see that a 970 has the ram gate issue and it's not powerful enough to power 1440p for the games I like so I waited for the 1070 which is then the right card for my usage. Stuff can come out later if they want but how would jumping on a 970 have made anything better  No need to wait any longer than the 1070 but that practicality is lost if we start presuming that waiting means waiting forever even when that is clearly not the case. Just find the card that actually works for your needs and don't buy the crap that doesn't fit your need inbetween.

You buy a 980ti?

Currently waiting for a 1080Ti in the new year to replace my 970Sli setup.

It will cost a ridiculous, obscene amount of money and will hurt like hell to place the order but it will be an upgrade that I will use for at least two years, just like my 970's, and will most likely add a second one when they go EOL at sale prices.

Same as me, I'm waiting for the next 290x type card that will last ages.

Personally I found polaris and pascal to be a disappointment for a die shrink so I'll happily wait another year.

Same here. I'm happily muddling along with my second hand 290, keeing my eyes open for something significantly better to come along. I think I'll be waiting a while :(

A year or more. For me my upgrade path is based on the performance I getting out of the games I playing..
I have long gone at trying to get 144fps @144hz instead I now aim at 60fps plus and doing so makes my upgrade choice last longer.

My 290 is starting to struggle with some games I needed to lower some settings down @1440p

Same here, the 290 on release was a fantastic value GPU, still holding its own at 60fps 1080p now on most titles, it's more my Fx8350 that's holding me back on the newer games, I don't think I'll spend more than what I did on my 290 on a GPU anyway, £330
