How many forum members play field hockey

I try to play when I get the opportunity (office team)... unfortunately, all the clubs around my area (south Brum) are too good, and so I don't even get to play for a laugh. :(

Bought a cheap Grays GX (3000 I think) for £50 when I stated again last year thinking if I really get back into the game I'll buy a better one, but found it was adequate for me.

What shoes are you guys using? Im struggling to find a decent selection on the highstreet. I take it some bog standard astro trainers arent going to offer enough protection from the ball?

Get some hockey astros, my tk ones are pretty good.

Anyone one of you have tips on shooting, as my shooting skills have a lot to be desired?

You don't have to hit it, a decent push or flick can have 70% of the power and takes a lot less time to carry out so you're less likely to be tackled, and it's less readable.

Played for county from 14y-21 and at uni,

Currently play for Olton & West Warwickshire Hockey Club, position LB & RB, though also play upfront for other non 1st/2nd eleven teams.

Not really, although it depends how nimble you are! If you're someone with "fussy" feet, then you'll need to make a trip somewhere local, but if you're happy to mail order, check out Barringtons or Gilmour Sports.

i play for wapping HC.. what hockey sticks you guys using?

Malik, with the England flag on :p

I play for Bebington based on the Wirral. We also play in the Kukri north west league. I drift between the 1st & 2nd team depending if I am wanted! (or not! :p)

Ok I started playing. Loving it! Although I'm not very good at all. :D Been looking on google for some sites that would perhaps have some videos or descriptions of really basic techniques. I'm really struggling to find anything decent. Google just seems to be loaded with crap these days. I cant find anything that I would consider a concrete all you need to know Hockey website.

If anyone could point me in the direction of a site or a book that goes over the basics I would really appreciate it. :)

anyone have you shooting techniques/advice.. for a powerful swing lifted shots e.g. aiming for top corner of the goal. I have kind of improved and "mastered" my pushshoots. But my lifted swing shoots still need working on.. I need advice please

A lot of people say hockey is a gay sport but they're couldn't be more wrong imo. It's very intimidating sometimes with the stiks and balls flying round all over the place. Horrific injuries seem to be ten-a-penny amongst the amateur brigade :D.

Stick + teeth
Stick + kneecap
Ball + face
Face + sand-based astro-turf
Etc.

Thread revival.

I need some advice on playing hockey. I am planning to fire off an email to join Didsbury Hockey Club (to join mens 3s-7s). I am almost a complete beginner, in that I used to play at school for the school team, but that was 10 years ago now, and I haven't played since, but I always enjoyed it.

I am going to contact the club captain to ask which training sessions to turn up to and what sort of kit I would need. I assume that shin pads and gumshield are absolute necessities, and would I need my own hockey stick or could I normally be provided with one, at least for the first few weeks to see how I go?

Any other tips for a beginner/somebody just starting out?

I wouldnt worry too much about a gum shield but shinpads are a bit of a must. I have played at a lot of different levels and never got hit in the face by a ball and never come close. A lot of people have more than one hockey stick so you shouldn't have any problems there for a few weeks.

Its not that dangerous until you start playing against *****. Its a little like football in that respect. Just make sure that you focus on the basics till you have them mastered. That is the biggest failing amongst hockey players in my view. Once they have played for a year or so they feel that they are above the basics and the number of people who cannot stop, pass and hit the ball cleanly is amazing.

Damnit! I've been asking at work if people thought it was a girls sport! Most said they would ridicule me if I started playing it!

Its only got that reputation because traditionally it was only played by girls at school. Go to literally any club and you will find that there are more mens teams than ladies. Guys are also a hell of a lot better until you get to the very top level with the ladies game.
