I can't understand why people willingly do unpaid overtime. Any overtime I do I get paid for, and would kick up a stink if I didn't.
I do 35 hours a week, nothing more. Work to live, not live to work.

Speak for yourself! I work about 35-40 hours a week on my PhD, much of which is spent in discussion with my advisors and my friends over coffee. In a few cases where I've been particularly inspired I work frantically for a prolonged period of time (including a couple of all nighters where I felt I was really making progress) but normally it's 7-8 hours a day in the office, then home, where I do little to no work. And I certainly never work weekends.D.P. said:I get paid for 40 hours a week or some such, but if you are doing a phd you are not working for a company where you don't give a damn, you are striving to do the best and be the best and as such you work for yourself.
