how many new games require 1gig+ of ram?

1024x768, 4x AA, dunno what af (if any) but ingame stuff = maxed

Oh if it makes any difference, im talking about fear multiplayer...
Also if it makes difference: Vsync= off

EDIT just checked, 16x af

Ive been playing like this always, and never noticed any lag while playing...

2nd EDIT:
Did benchy with fraps, minimum fps was 21 maximum 59
avrg around 31

Also no: shadows are maximum too and soft shadows are on

funny, my x1800gto + 2gigs of RAM starts to kick a fit with everything truly maxed in fear...still playable but noticeably slower in places, im guessing you have shadows turned down a notch tbh

I stand by my suggestions. With settings at the right levels, those games do benefit. My smooth and your smooth may of course vary. Having a large monitor and being sensitive to judder etc, I pick up stuff like fps drops most of the time.

Other games that dont (while i see ppl mentioning them):
CoH? I play it maxed on 1 gig and its smooth...

What ress ? ive got a vfd on the front of my p.c that shows sytem info including memory usage, COH is a huge memory hog, my rams at 98% usage on 2gig while playing ... and thats on a Nlited to #*#* copy of xp
Settings maxed @ 1920x1200

True, but perfectly playable w/o lag if in pagefile, in my case thats on a raid array, but coh plays plays fine on 1 gig...

@ Jihad

Its a rts, not a fps, nor am i playing on 19xx res...
1024 does it for me...

However thats the last thing ill say about it, dont care anymore if u dont believe me, try it urself if u want (remove 1 ram stick) ull see its perfectly playable on the same sets...

the key bit here is the res you run at

most peopl run 1280 x 1024 which is more graphically demanding. Hence peoples scepticism at your claimed frame rates.

I know for a fact that BF2 takes 1.5 gigs of memory at full on 1280 x 1024. So for it to use a gig on 1024 x 768 is not beyond the realms of comprehension.

But to answer the original OP. Not many games "need" 2gb. But there are plenty of games that will benefit from it, such as the ones mentioned above. particularly

BF2 / BF2142
Company of Heros
Fear
World of Warcraft
Oblivion
Call of Duty 2

Fear: Ultra smooth on 1 gig with everything (physics, gfx) maxed out...

Games that do:
Quake 4

Definitely can't agree with this. FEAR is way more of a RAM hog than Quake4; putting textures on Medium is the only way I've been able to keep peak commit charge below 1gig in FEAR.

As for the performance, if you think 21fps is "Ultra smooth", then I envy you :)

Not sure about Fear (felt sick of its performance issues and wiped it off my disk), but the last time I loaded up Condemned: Criminal Origins with 2gb, graphics fully maxed out @ 1280x1024 with 4xAA, I still experienced small stutters here and there (especially after the autosaves). That said, the actual fps isn't that bad.

On the other hand, with 1gb the game was simply unplayable with textures at max; even at medium, there were frequent stutters.

BF2/BF2142 are also memory hogs, but with a little tweaking the game is perfectly playable with 1gb ram provided you set textures to medium.

Oblivion another memory hog and even with 2gb I still get stuttering when riding around in a horse, though I think thats an issue with the graphics engine and how it loads content into the memory.

Quake 4 with Ultra setting was simply unplayable with 1gb ram, plus that was with a 512mb graphics card.

Company of Heroes improved quite a bit going from 1gb to 2gb ram; stuttering was virtually eliminated and everything, from the gameplay to the menus felt more responsive and fluid.

In general I'd say 2gb makes for a much more pleasant gaming experience and you don't constantly have the feeling your computer is choking to death every time you exit a game.

as title says...is there many new games that require 1 gig? could people list the games they know of.

There's hardly any games which *require* 1gig. However, a lot of modern games will use >768meg RAM if set high enough so it is a good minimum starting point. I'm still using 1gig RAM because I haven't seen a cheap way to increase my capacity while retaining my existing speed (PC3700/cas2/1T/dual channel). Ideally I'd like to see something like 2*1gig PC4000 cas2 priced at £100 but I can't see that happening now what with DDR being old tech. So I think I'll be stuck with 1gig RAM until I move to an intel multicore setup sometime in the future.

The sweet spot right now is probably 1.5gig RAM, very few games use more than that.

is it just me or does dark messiah use a helluvalot of ram!! got fed up with it in the end as it takes so long to load between levels...

Wow, I remember this being asked last year - the first people to get 2GBs were lambasted on these boards. It was around the time BF2 came out. Loads of people we're saying it wouldn't make much of a difference, but thats not the case.

A memory upgrade is one of the sweetest you can do. Everything is way more responsive/consistant. I've done this on 4 different rigs over the years and it always makes a hell of a difference.

When I upgrade my CPU next year, I'll be seriously looking at 4GB.

Ditto bfar. 4GB isn't needed now, or even next year probably, but in the scope of the lifetime of my PC I suspect I'll find a use for it.

Always find it funny to read people's spec sigs with their uber fast SLI/x-fire setup and 1GB of ram.. ;)

:D lol

I'll have 4GBs v. soon, but it'll require an OS change to use it properly! Stupid 32bit XP :(

Not sure about u guys but 2Gb solved my problem with the looping sound crash in HL2, can finally play hours of CSS and HL2 Deathmatch without any problem.

COH in particular is loading a lot faster with 2Gb and will quit to desktop in a second compared to 10 secs with 1Gb.

Yeah, probably...once the nVidia drivers are sorted out anyway. I'm not too keen, if XP64 weren't so poor I'd go for that happily enough. Not sure I can be bothered to fit learning Linux into my life at the moment.

I have just built a machine for my friend

Asrock ConroeXfire 775
E6300
1GB Ram
x1950xtx 512mb

It is a steady as a rock and every game that I have thrown at it, it has owned!!

1GB of RAM is good enough for most games.
