How many of you guitarists use the guitar volume knob less than 11?

do your guitarists ever alter the tone dave?

Never.
There is one part in Bad Company's Good Loving Gone bad where the rhythmn guitarist changes channel for 4 bars on the slow bit but thats it.
I've also just remembered that at the start of Down Down (Status Quo) he plays the quiet bit at the start and his volume is down to about 5 and then he cranks it up to full to start the riff.
Those are the only two bits where the sound changes - boring hey?
Actually it totally suits the music we play and believe me we have experimented with different tones but we decided many years ago to play it safe.

I've actually forgotten that over the years I have played guitar in many bands and many different genres of band and I've used my guitar volume a lot.
It just shows how my mind wanders after 7 years of not playing guitar in a band and of course old age setting in :)

fair enough, i usually have the bridge pickup set to full treble and the neck pickup with the tone all the way down to 0.

gives me a huge change when i switch pickups, gives me something sludgy on the neck for chords, and solos just sound so phat :p

So, DMPoole, thanks to this forum you've recently been introduced to 'tuning down half-a-step' and 'volumes that go lower than 11' ... so I can be the one to introduce you to this wonderful thing? :D

My Les Paul sounds really cheap with the volume knob down at all - and the spread over the pot isn't very even (at 0 its mute, at 1 its 80% volume and after that is all pretty much 100% - the dial isn't very intuitive)

I do change the tone a bit though. Tend to have 2 main tones, full on bridge with full tone and volume, and half-tone neck pickup for solos :)

What is it, will it go in my 8 track cartridge system?

:p

Tell you what, that half tone has done wonders with my vocals.
It ain't easy doing 10 ACDC songs a night.

Both the guitarists in my band have amps which get louder as they warm up. After an hour of playing they will both be much louder than when we started without touching anything.

That could explain a lot of things.
Both of my guitarists use valve amps and they are turned on 1 minute before we hit the stage.

Definitely mate. Even more so with valve amps. Our lead guitarist uses a vintage Marshall valve and that really changes its behaviour when it warms up. He won't soundcheck until it's been on and played for a good while.

99% of the time the volume is right up. On one song i drop it down to about 5/6 as it needs a distorted guitar but at a lower level, and if you do this on the amp, it's not as easy to get the same level back.

As above though, if you soundcheck through a valve amp that's only been on for a minute, it definately can get louder if its left on until you play. They also need about 20 mins before they stick at their tone as well.

Hopefully the sound tech is good enough to compensate for the difference between an empty room and a full (hopefully!) one as well!

Not a good idea really, especially if you're playing at volume, the valves 'need' time to warm up to prolong their life and to also get the best tone out of your gear. I always like to let mine warm up for 5 minutes or so before turning standby on.

EUREKA

Just got back from my gig and I explained to the band and the Entertainment/mixing guy about valves warming up. Of course we all then remembered and turned the amps on a good 30 mins before going on.
No complaints tonight :D
