ok so i decided the other night after lending my laptop to a mate and him putting loads of crap onto it that i would reinstall windows.

firstly i ran dban and wiped the hdd clean and used the discs provided by sony to reinstall.

things going great except the sony discs come with al lthe rubbish that came on laptop... i.e norton 2005, trial of office 2003 etc etc etc

so i go thro and delete them and accidently delete one for FN button which i could not find anywhere on the net to redo.

so 2nd time round i reinstall....going fine...set windows update to auto and cant be bothered to keep going thro them.

now i get to where i am now...windows update complete needs to restart pc

fine i think thats normal so i press ok

only to find that when it restarts i get BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH and a message
stop: c0000135 > this application has failed to start because winsrv was not found, reinstalling the application may fix this problem.

so which update did this and why?
time for 3rd time lucky!!!!!

You dont say what your operating system is, but if you search google theres loads of info on this. It seems to be refering to Windows XP Service Pack 2.

You could try manually uninstalling Service Pack 2, which requires
that you boot the problem computer to the Recovery Console using
either the Windows XP Installation CD or the multi-diskette boot set
that you can download from Microsoft.

The uninstall instructions for SP2 are at

The boot diskette images can be obtained from

sorry yes using xp
to late now ive started a re-install using hte sony discs
just strange how its never done it before even few days ago when i updated everything fine just wasnt concentrating on which sony bits i was deleting!!!!

There's a moral to this story here and that is don't lend your Laptop to a mate. Talking of which if I were stupid enough to lend a Laptop to anyone then I would be aghast if when it was returned there was as you succinctly put it "a load of crap" on it. I don't think I would refer to this individual as a mate either from now on, how very very rude.

you lend your computer illiterate friend your laptop to do some schoolwork on and you get it back and he's installed some silly things on it and you'd never talk to him again?

jesus.

why did you decide to reinstall windows and not just remove the "load of crap"?

firstly i ran dban and wiped the hdd clean and used the discs provided by sony to reinstall.

Now - a friend of mine has a Sony laptop . There is a partition on it with data that Sony uses on a reinstall . Even though you have reinstall cds are you sure there wasn't a partition on it?

Did the dban wipe the Whole hdd clean?

hmm...well.... when i got it back i found out his gf had been downloading stuff from limewire and got a virus on it .
as for partition well i kinda wiped that along time ago when i tried to hackintosh it !!!!

alls well except ive gone and deleted the fn button driver again !!!!!! and cant find anyhting on the web except other people who have doen the same and looking for drivers

ohh.

I hope this link helps.

Snippet: thought i posted to you last night- but maybe it was in a different forum.
you need 3 drivers from sony- and you will find them under sony drivers download. Ine of them is called HKServ. when you load the 3 drivers, you MUST restart your machine, in between installing the drivers. they seem to be dependent on each other. i had the same problem when i upgraded a sony satellite from win 98se to win xp pro. incidently, sony told me i couldn't do it.
the machine is now running like a top.

I have successfully got my Fn keys to work. I took the advice from the above Geek, Thank You! and found the drivers I needed. I could not find them for my Model VAIO but figured the drivers would be the same for any model, which they were. The answer to my keys being the wrong was simple. I forgot to change the regional settings once I upgraded my OS. Thanks for your help.
