How many seconds can you legally stream music for (quiz related)?

I can't find the answer, Google fail.

I have mates who run quizzes on Facebook and they are getting turned off or in the case of one friend, a letter from Warner Brothers threatening him.
I think the problem is they stream too long so for instance they'll play the intro, 1st verse, chorus and then ask the question where most quizzers like myself need 5 seconds of the intro.

So has anybody got any idea how long of a song you can legally stream for before getting jumped on?

I don't think there is a specific time. I believe it comes under "fair use" and that is most probably decided on a individual basis.

Like playing 10 sec on an advert is different to playing 10 secs on a quiz.


However they can get around it by getting a PPL/PRS license at around £4.30 per quiz

There is no 'fair use' on other people's content, you either pay for the rights to use it, or you don't use it. It's very simple.

Yes, I'm sure. The reason they are getting hit by the companies is that they aren't allowed to use it because they've not paid the rights. You can use other's content if you are critiquing / parodying / covering it but straight up use of it isn't on and is exactly why they are getting hit.

But how does time warner know that the individual isn't paying ppl/prs

There are millions of royalty free tracks out there which can be used, no need to deal with this ridiculous corporate greed over 10 seconds of music. These companies literally make billions on this music, the fact they’re coming after Dave and his 12 mates who are hosting a pub quiz online over 10 seconds of music is just tragic and pathetic.

In fact I’d go so far as to say it has the potential to be counterproductive to their goal of making money whilst maintaining their reputation as a reputable music supplier.
 
isnt there a website you can join for a really small fee that gives you access to a pretty big selection of music you can use.

They also get paid on Spotify, Apple Music etc so I’m not sure what the problem is.

The whole idea is they are live streaming and while doing the quiz they will play a bit of a track off their phone from Spotify.
You can imagine it is quite a bad sound and some people moan (can you hold it closer etc) but Facebook still stop it or Warner Brothers moan about it.
Playing from You Tube or Amazon Prime is still going to cause the same issue.
I've just done another music quiz but he kept it to all questions and pictures.
