How many seconds can you legally stream music for (quiz related)?

The whole idea is they are live streaming and while doing the quiz they will play a bit of a track off their phone from Spotify.
You can imagine it is quite a bad sound and some people moan (can you hold it closer etc) but Facebook still stop it or Warner Brothers moan about it.
Playing from You Tube or Amazon Prime is still going to cause the same issue.
I've just done another music quiz but he kept it to all questions and pictures.

I never knew that Facebook did that. I’m not on it. Is there not another platform?

OK I'll tell them to look at that.
i do know that 3 weeks ago quite a few didn't take part because they didn't want to install something else, one of them cited Zoom as being run by the Chinese :)

Yes, if that pish gets started there's probably nothing you can do about it. It's quite ironic when they prefer Facebook. :p

When I do my quizzes, I use Zoom. I don't need to use the spotlight video because I always do a screen share so they all see my screen. That lets me put the questions on a spreadsheet and click the mouse to reveal the answer. It's also ideal for picture rounds, and when you share screen you can share your device sound so if you play an MP3 they hear it clearly as opposed to it getting distorted via your mic.

But if they're worried about privacy, they'd be better off with Zuckerberg and Cambridge Analytica. :p

If somebody coughs or says something simple like "Oh I know that" it switches to that person :)
It's a right pain.

I thought standard practice that everyone except the quiz master mutes while questions are being asked. You can selectively unmute for clarifications, but it works fine so long as everyone vaguely behaves

I don't think there is a specific time. I believe it comes under "fair use" and that is most probably decided on a individual basis.

Like playing 10 sec on an advert is different to playing 10 secs on a quiz.

However they can get around it by getting a PPL/PRS license at around £4.30 per quiz

From what I understand from lengthy copyright discussions on another forum "Fair Use" is a defence in court i.e. you end up before the beak and you plead "fair use" and its up to the discretion of the judge. Its not a blanket permission.

Fair use is dependent on a number of factors - length is one of them, but also how material it is. It can be a 2 second clip but if its crucial and important to the song, then that will still not fall under fair use. Varies from case to case and discretion of the judge is the eventual answer who will look at these, amongst other things.
