I currently have a 7900x and now I only game, would it make sense to switch to a 7800x3d, is the 7800X3d that much better than a 7900x? I see it as around a £150-200 outlay considering what I can get back for my 7900x

Depends on how you would define 'much better'. The 7800X3D is a better pure-gaming CPU, but only you can answer if the £150-200 outlay is worth it for the gains. At 1080p the gains will be significant, however looking at your setup you'll prob be in the 1440-2160p range, and at this resolution, the gains will be lower, but could still be in the 5-20% range...

Yeah I game at 4k

If you already have the 7900X it's not really worth it to change particulary at 4K where the differences are minimised anyway as the GPU mostly wont be able to render as fast as the CPU feeds it at that point, hence GPU limitations rather than CPU at higher resolutions are typically seen. If you had not alreayd bought the 7900X then yes I and most others would recommend the 7800X3D for just gaming.

Ask in the MM if anyone fancies a straight swap, someone might be more productivity orientated and want to change.

No harm in giving it a shot, worst thing that happens is nobody bites.

Otherwise I'd not bother at 4K tbh.

I switched from a 7600x to a 7800x3d and while I don't exactly regret it, it was unnecessary. And I play VR racing sims mainly. If I played random games @ 4k, I wouldn't even care what cpu is in there as long as it's post 2020'ish

What sort of frame increase did you notice?

I'm considering buying a 7800x3d in the next couple of weeks for mainly DCS VR but curious if there's a better option for that?

Given your gpu and resolution (guessing 1440 +) i dont think it would be worth it. I suppose you might see some minor power savings, but these would be minimal.

Not every game will benefit from the 3D cache. Games that do, gains can be expressive, but at 4K, I don’t think is worth the hassle. The only benefit is that the 7800x3D is a very easy chip to cool. But in general, the 7900X should be very fast on gaming. I moved from a 7600 to the 7800x3D. At 1440p, single player, was more a itch for upgrading than real need. But I’m happy with the CPU.

Only in certain gaming cases will it be significant, 20-25%. I swapped from a i7 12700K to a 7800X3D recently. Out of the box there was hardly any difference in most games. In synthetic benchmarks the i7 was faster due to more cores.

Then I optimised the 7800X3D so it would draw less power and never go above 75C. Now it consistently runs at the 5050MHz clock limit (4800MHz normal) and now games feel that much snappier and Cyberpunk went from 85 fps (i7) to 100+ fps (X3D) in the high benchmark.

The 7900X has 5600MHz boost which is a lot more than the 3D cache limited 7800X3D. Hence why it only shows it edge in limited cases and generally could be slower especially in productivity.

One thing I did I try when I had a 3900X was enable the game mode I think it was in Ryzen Master which disabled the slowest CCD so the best CCD could run with less restrictions and clock higher. Made it a high quality 6 core gaming CPU with 400MHz higher clocks than say a 3600X of the time.

That may still work with the 7900X and is just a software download if not already installed.
