Hey

Iv moved into a house, but we cant figure out how to split the bills.

There are 2 single people and 1 couple; in 3 rooms.

How do you think the bills should be split?

Any opinions (want unbaised suggestions!)

Andy

Just use the old simple equation:

Rent divided by room occupancy, utilities divided by users:)

bills 1/4 each.

rent well, thats debatable but usually 1/4 as well.
or something like

4/10, 3/10, 3/10

as the couple are still using communal places.

4 ways gets my vote. Each person is going to use just as much hot water (hopefully, unless they're smelly!) heating, TV licence etc.

Funny you should say that.

I got into a rigth argument with my housemates when I wanted my girlfriend to come live with us one year.

There were 4 of us, in 4 rooms. With her it would have been 5 people, in 4 rooms. We were happy to split the utility bills 5 ways, but they expected the rent to go 5 ways as well.

Needless to say I told them to get stuffed. Rent is per ROOM, not per OCCUPANT.

So, I would say BILLS split amongst occupants, RENT split amongst rooms.

What ever you do, make sure that everybody knows and agrees to the situation, maybe get it in writing the arrangement. This way no one can turn around a year from now and claim something different

Got To say I disagree got into exactly the same situation at uni and there should be some weighting to factor in the fact that she will use the bathroom living room and kitchen as much or in the case of one room proably more than anyone else and be doing so for the princely sum of nothing, which is hardly fair on those that are paying for the priveledge now is it?

What would 'she' be using that isn't covered by utility bills?

Disagree. The extra person will have use of a kitchen, living room and bathroom as well as the bedroom she shares. As such, a per room fee is unfair on the other house mates. I agree with an earlier post, 4/10 3/10 3/10 is a nice compromise which reflects the usage of communal areas.

in my opinion rent is paid per room, not for use of the common areas. but i would expect the extra party to contribute towards the utilities. some properties i have looked at in the past charged different rates on the size of room, however these people might use the common areas more because of it so why should they pay less?

The room?

The room is changed by the letting agency as £xxx per ROOM.

The bills should be split amongst all the occupants, as she would use her own water/gas/electric/internet/etc.

How is this so hard to understand?
She's not using a room of her own, she's sharing (or would have been) with me.

wrong, most letting agreements are per house, not per room.

sounds fair

the only slight difference could be if the rooms are of significantly different sizes
